PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dean Ambush (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andrew Coulter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Andrew Coulter will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dean Ambush!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Andrew Coulter!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Roger Salmon and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coulter shoots in looking for a takedown but Ambush manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Coulter's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Coulter tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Ambush manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Ambush closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Coulter's guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Coulter being controlled here, momentarily.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ambush accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ambush slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

We're going to have a standup here because Dean Ambush wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Coulter gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Ambush seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Ambush postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Ambush slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Ambush scores with punches from side control.
Ambush is staying tight to Coulter's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Ambush has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Ambush postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Coulter on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Ambush moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Ambush working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Ambush's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Ambush seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Coulter for as long as he can get away with.

Ambush has knee on belly and moves into mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Ambush has his takedown stuffed

and Coulter counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Ambush!
Ambush gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Ambush keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Coulter tries to pass to full mount but Ambush defends it.
Coulter trying to control the action but Ambush is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ambush gets full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ambush tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Ambush has a closed guard, preventing Coulter from standing up.
Ambush has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Coulter is breathing heavily.

Ambush is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Ambush is controlling the pace.
Ambush wants to pass the guard but Coulter is defending well.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Ambush looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Dean Ambush overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Dean Ambush.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Ambush is defended easily by Coulter.
Coulter is looking to chop away at Ambush's legs.
Dean Ambush seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Ambush avoids a low kick by using good footwork.

Ambush closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Ambush looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Ambush sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Coulter's guard.

Coulter gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Ambush is in close to Coulter's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Ambush landing some decent shots from guard.

Ambush lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Coulter is trying to hold Ambush in close to prevent damage but Ambush has managed to pass into half guard.
Ambush perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Coulter takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Dean Ambush just wasn't active enough.
Coulter lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Coulter.
Coulter shoots for a double leg takedown but Ambush sprawls well. He's pushed Coulter's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Coulter gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Ambush is stalling in the full guard.
Ambush distracts Coulter with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Ambush might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Ambush seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Dean Ambush is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Dean Ambush has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
No luck for Coulter with that takedown attempt.

Dean Ambush showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Ambush has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Dean Ambush decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
