Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 1, fighting out of New York, Chck Liddel! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of New York, mr Catch! The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Columbo Gatti and Russell Pearce.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Catch looks to land a combination but Liddel avoids it well. Liddel looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Catch fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Catch shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Liddel sprawls well. Liddel wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Catch gets slowly back to his feet. Catch misses with a body kick. Catch throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Liddel counters with a lovely shot to the body. A telegraphed right hand from Liddel misses the target. Liddel looks to score with a jab to the body but Catch is just out of range. Catch misses with a wild combination.
Catch looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
That's one minute gone in the round. Liddel gets caught flat footed, as Catch shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Catch showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
OK we're going to have a standup here. mr Catch hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Catch throws a nice looking combination but Liddel bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Catch shoots in but no luck this time. Catch tries for a takedown but Liddel sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Chck Liddel has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of mr Catch. Catch thows a left - swing and a miss! Catch gets a takedown into half guard. Catch is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Catch tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Catch lands a nice shot to the head. Catch working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Liddel turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Catch off and cradles Liddel's limp body as Catch celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). mr Catch! mr Catch is the new light heavyweight champion!
