PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gabriel Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and King Marvin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Marvin has chosen King of Kings by Motorhead as his entrance music. This should be fireworks!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gabriel Rua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 26 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, King Marvin!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, William Gold and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Marvin's calf.
Rua fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Marvin slips a straight right by Rua.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Rua, right into the meat.
Rua takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Rua lands a two punch combo.
Rua ducks under a wild hook from Marvin.
A shot to the body from Rua misses

and Marvin counters with a takedown into side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Marvin tries to advance to mount but can't.
Marvin misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Marvin in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Rua is trying to get back to half guard.

Marvin tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Marvin has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Rua defending against the ground and pound.
Marvin in side control, throwing shots but Rua defends.
Marvin working the ground and pound but Rua is defending the strikes.
Marvin trying to control the action but Rua is working from the bottom.
Marvin looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Rua is avoiding damage well.
Marvin working away.
Marvin laying and praying for a moment but Rua takes advantage and regains half guard.

Marvin misses with a head shot. Rua uses the momentum to regain guard.
Rua preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Rua keeping full guard, as Marvin tries to pass.
Rua has control of Marvin's left arm, preventing Marvin from doing any damage.
Marvin advances to half guard.
Marvin looks to land a strike but Rua avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Marvin has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Marvin tries to free his leg and advance position but Rua is retaining full guard.
Marvin trying to control the position from guard on top but Rua is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Rua trying to keep a closed guard but Marvin is proving a slippery customer.
Rua working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Marvin.
Marvin is looking to work some ground and pound but Rua has wrist control.
Rua looking for a sweep. Not yet Rua, not yet.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Marvin accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Marvin throwing strikes from guard but Rua blocks nicely.
Rua keeping full guard, as Marvin tries to pass.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Marvin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Rua's guard.

Marvin is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Rua doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Marvin.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Marvin in particular looking to stall.

Marvin is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Rua has managed to free his arm - good work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Marvin lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

King Marvin dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Marvin decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Rua is staying active underneath Marvin, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Marvin is working for a submission of some sort.

Marvin is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Rua sees it coming and defends easily.
Marvin is looking to take a break and control but Rua is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
King Marvin has got the better of the ground game so far.
Marvin tries to pass to full mount but Rua defends it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Marvin throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Marvin frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Marvin is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Rua can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Marvin connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Marvin trying to control but Rua is having none of it.
Marvin cracks Rua with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Rua bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Marvin has an active guard here but Rua has managed to pass into half guard.

Rua is pressing down on Marvin's thigh, looking to free his foot. Marvin is holding on for now.
Marvin trying to hold on to Rua's head to control him but Rua postures up.
Rua trying to control from half guard but Marvin is working away.

Rua passes to side control.

Marvin is not content to let Rua control the position.
Marvin is trying to get back to half guard.

Marvin is trying to control Rua's posture but Rua avoids it.
Marvin is trying to improve his position.
Rua trying to control the action but Marvin is working from the bottom.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

King Marvin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Rua feints a jab promting Marvin to slip. Rua then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Marvin slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Rua thows a body shot but no joy.
Marvin swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Gabriel Rua seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Rua throws an off balance right hand
and Marvin counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Marvin tests Rua's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Rua moves out of range as Marvin strikes.
Rua fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Marvin lands with a right hand.
Rua takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Rua throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Rua thows a body shot but no joy.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Marvin shoots in and drives through. Rua sprawls well.
Marvin moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Rua, right into the meat.
Rua is looking to clinch.
Rua tries to land a leg kick but Marvin saw it coming and moves away.
Rua takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Rua keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Rua is looking to chop away at Marvin's legs.

Rua has taken the fight to the clinch.
Rua is trying to push Marvin away but Marvin has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Marvin misses with a hook to the ribs.
Marvin scores with a shoulder strike.
Rua misses with an elbow over the top.
Marvin struggles to land a body shot inside as Rua controls his hands.
Marvin misses with some punches.
Rua taking a breather.
Gabriel Rua has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Rua is trying to break the clinch but Marvin has him pressed against the cage.
Marvin misses with a hook from the clinch.
Rua stalling in the clinch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Marvin fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Marvin goes for a takedown attempt but Rua pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Gabriel Rua has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of King Marvin.
Rua bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Rua throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Marvin tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rua swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Marvin has taken the fight to the clinch.
Rua looking to stall.

Rua breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Marvin scores with a nice right hand.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rua keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Marvin.
Rua tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Marvin was well out of range. Poor timing from Rua.
Nice jab there from Marvin.
Rua buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Gabriel Rua is winning the standup battle so far.
Rua doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Marvin jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Rua connects with a body shot that sends Marvin's belly button to the back.
King Marvin is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Marvin shoots in but Rua avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Nice defenses there by Rua.
Marvin looks to score with a jab to the body but Rua is just out of range.
Marvin pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Rua lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Rua misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Marvin.

Rua takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Gabriel Rua is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Marvin moves out of range of the strikes.
Some wild striking there from Marvin.
Rua lands with an uppercut that bounces Marvin off the cage and back into range.
An inside leg kick from Rua misses.
A big right from Marvin misses.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Marvin avoids the body shot from Rua.
Rua throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Marvin sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Rua is looking to wear down Marvin with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Rua tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Marvin was well out of range. Poor timing from Rua.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rua thows a body shot but no joy.

Marvin has closed the distance and engaged Rua in a clinch.
Marvin avoids the elbow strike from Rua, against the cage.
Rua lands a body punch.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gabriel Rua showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Marvin has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
