PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Markus Askren (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Branko Butic (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Butic has chosen Groove Addicts- Wages of Sin as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Branko Butic is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Markus Askren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Branko Butic!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Alan Glass and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Askren forces Butic back against the cage and clinches.

Askren lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Askren is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Askren seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Butic for as long as he can get away with.
Butic is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Askren decides to stand and escape the position.
Butic throws a body punch but Askren moves out of range.

and Askren counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Butic's guard now.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Markus Askren just wasn't active enough.

Butic avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Askren wants to get back to striking at distance but Butic won't allow it.

Askren shoots in for a double leg but Butic sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Butic is looking to regain half guard here but Askren keeps moving and retains side control.
Askren is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Butic's shoulder. That is not cool.
Butic wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!

Askren is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Butic knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Askren tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Askren wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Butic, who protects the arm well.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Askren looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
The fight stays on the outside here - Askren looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Askren has clasped his hands together around Butic's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Butic manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Askren goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Butic turns into him and now he's in Askren's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Butic wants to clinch up but Askren keeps it at a distance.
Askren throws a right and a left that Butic avoids nicely.

Butic is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Butic takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Askren's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Markus Askren showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Askren, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
