PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Connor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Doby (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Connor comes to the cage accompanied by Ça vaut mieux que d'attraper la scarlatine by Ray Venture. Doby has chosen International Players Anthem as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
28 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, John Connor! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shane Doby! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Robert Douchet and Yves DeLean.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Doby throws a hook but Connor avoids it easily. Doby scores with a crisp jab that stopped Connor in his tracks. Connor swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Connor swings for the body but Doby moves out of range.
Doby slips a jab and a cross from Connor.
Connor throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Doby sees it coming and avoids it easily. Doby looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Connor misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Doby.
Connor scores with a decent looking hook. Connor chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Connor waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Doby. Connor takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. John Connor seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Doby has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. This has been an exciting period of action! A punch combination from Connor misses. Doby throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
That's one minute gone in the round. Doby jabs Connor to the body, keeping him at a distance. Connor falls off balance throwing a combination
and Doby counters with a lovely straight right hand! Connor takes a swing at Doby's ribcage but misses. Some wild striking there from Connor.
Doby misses with a leg kick. Connor throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Connor cracks the inside of Doby's front leg. Connor shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Doby is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Doby moves into full guard.
Connor might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Doby is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Connor defends well. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Connor won't allow Doby to sweep him here. Doby working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Connor. Doby had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Connor defends it easily. Connor is working Doby over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Connor scoring with some ground and pound. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Doby has his foot on Connor's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Connor works his way back into a safe position though. Connor passes easily into side control. Nice work. Connor landing strikes.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Connor wants to lay and pray for a moment but Doby keeps working. Doby is not in a great position here, taking some shots. Doby is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Connor's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Doby is looking to improve his position.
Connor wants to take a breather but Doby is having none of it. Doby is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Connor pulls his head out easily. Doby wants to improve his position but Connor is controlling well.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Connor works his way into side control. Doby takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Doby is looking to regain half guard here but Connor keeps moving and retains side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Doby being controlled for a moment. Doby throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.
Connor cracks Doby with an elbow. That is naaassty. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Doby manages to get back to half guard. Connor is trying to control. Doby wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Connor looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Doby with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Doby tries to roll over but Connor keeps him under control. Connor is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Doby doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Connor. Doby wants to improve his position but Connor is controlling well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that John Connor will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
A combination from Doby does no damage. Doby connects with a body shot. Jab by Connor. The fight stays on the outside here - Doby looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Doby has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. Connor pivots, looking for a leg kick but Doby is out of range and Connor settles back down. A combination from Connor does no damage. Connor takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. John Connor is winning the standup battle so far. Doby misses the jab. Connor throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Doby sees it coming and avoids it easily. Doby moves out of range as Connor strikes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Doby ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Connor throws a leg kick that misses. Connor gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Connor pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Good work by Doby as he checks the leg kick. Connor scores with a jab to the head.
Doby scores with the left hand. Connor knows he should have avoided that one. Connor scores with a one two! Doby had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes. A head kick misses from Connor. Connor slips under a jab. John Connor is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Doby shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Connor manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Connor manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Doby manages to get himself to full guard.

Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Connor trying to control but Doby is working from the bottom. Doby avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Doby working a defensive guard here.
Doby looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Connor lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Connor avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Connor got a little sloppy there for a moment and Doby has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Connor has managed to get both his arms back between Doby's legs - danger averted.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Doby isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Connor stacks Doby on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Connor! Connor landing strikes. Doby is looking for a sweep. Connor wants to lay and pray for a moment but Doby keeps working. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Doby manages to get back to half guard. Connor is keen to just control but Doby is a slippery customer. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Doby looking for submissions off his back. Connor is keen to just control but Doby is a slippery customer. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Shane Doby will probably get the nod - 10:9. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

letting Doby counter with a right hand. Good shot there by Connor. Connor fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Connor smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. Connor dodges the punch combination from Doby.
Connor misses with a double jab
and Doby counters by moving into the clinch. Doby has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight. Connor pulls guard successfully.
Doby trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Connor manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! Connor wants to control from the top but Doby keeps moving.
That's one minute gone in the round. Connor passes Doby's left leg - he's now in half guard. Connor is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Doby is just riding it out for now. Connor eventually gives up the hold. Doby works his way to full guard. Good work. Doby escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Connor gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Connor trying to control the position from guard on top but Doby is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Doby bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Connor's guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Doby trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Doby throws a big right hand that misses. Connor is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Connor controls Doby momentarily but Doby frees himself. Doby preventing the sweep. Connor working a defensive guard here.
Doby is working Connor over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Doby pushing down on Connor's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Connor looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Doby thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Doby is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Doby seems to be looking for submissions.
Doby is trying to control. Connor wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Shane Doby has got the better of the ground game so far. Doby thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Connor's head. Connor is controlling Doby's trapped leg to prevent Doby from advancing to side control. Connor gets full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Connor is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Doby is aware though and is defending well. Doby stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Connor swivels though and keeps the full guard. Connor looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Connor can't keep his opponent in guard - Doby advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Connor is defending against the submission attempts here by Doby.
Doby seems to be looking for submissions.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Connor has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Doby is working away from the top position though.
And that's the end of the fight! I would just about give that final round to Shane Doby. I think Doby has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
