Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gino Abate! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Anthony Pettis! The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Franklyn Lucas and Columbo Gatti.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Abate throws a series of punches but Pettis moves out of range. Abate throws a combination that misses and Pettis counters with an outside leg kick.
Sloppy strikes from Abate. Those never looked like landing. Abate throws a series of punches but Pettis moves out of range. Pettis is looking to clinch but Abate is avoiding it.

Abate throws a nice looking combination but Pettis bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Abate throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. Gino Abate seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Pettis tries for a takedown but Abate sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. OK we're going to have a standup here. Anthony Pettis hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Abate throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Abate leaves Pettis with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Pettis shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Abate is trying to defend but Pettis finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Pettis tries to pass the half guard into mount. Abate knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky. Pettis closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Abate's guard. Pettis wants to pass the guard but Abate is keeping the position. Abate is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Abate is pulling down on Pettis's head. It's preventing any offense from Pettis, at least for the moment. Abate pushes Pettis off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. Pettis avoids a punch combination nicely.

Abate fights it but they end up in guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Abate working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Pettis. Pettis engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Pettis's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Abate wriggles free and stands up. Pettis shoots in for a double leg but Abate sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Pettis looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Abate is looking to control Pettis's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Abate avoid being mounted? Pettis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Abate. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Abate misses with a few strikes there.
