PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Roy Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jean Francois Montcalm (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nelson comes to the cage accompanied by Hyper - We Control . We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Roy Nelson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jean Francois Montcalm !
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Dillan Fox and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nelson throws a right and a left that both miss.

Nelson clinches up with Montcalm and pushes him back against the cage.

Nelson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Montcalm tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Nelson swivels and escapes.

Nelson moves into the clinch.
Nelson tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Nelson has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Montcalm uses from the top position.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Montcalm tries to free his leg and advance position but Nelson is retaining full guard.

Nelson has his hands on Montcalm 's head, controlling the position.

Nelson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Montcalm is aware though and is defending well.
Nelson could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Montcalm got a little sloppy there for a moment and Nelson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Montcalm has managed to get both his arms back between Nelson's legs - danger averted.

Montcalm looking to sit in guard and control but Nelson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Nelson stands up and waves to Montcalm to follow him.
Roy Nelson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Montcalm changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Nelson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Montcalm decides to stand up, so the ref orders Nelson to his feet.

Nelson clinches with his opponent.
Nelson makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

Nelson manages to break the clinch.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Nelson drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Montcalm wants to control but Nelson postures up.
Montcalm parries the strikes from Nelson easily there. Nelson is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Montcalm to escape.

Nelson decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Nelson fails with an attempt to clinch.
Nelson swats away the attempt to clinch by Montcalm .

Nelson gets in close and instigates a clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Montcalm is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Nelson to keep the fight standing.

Montcalm tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Nelson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Montcalm moves in looking to clinch but Nelson pushes him off.

Nelson manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Montcalm on his heels. He'll look to pass Montcalm 's guard now, I'm sure.

Montcalm is pulling down on Nelson's head. It's preventing any offense from Nelson, at least for the moment.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Nelson's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Montcalm utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Montcalm is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Montcalm keeping moving, preventing Nelson from controlling successfully.
This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Montcalm tries to clinch but Nelson is having none of it.
Nelson lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Nelson.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nelson shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Montcalm is trying to defend but Nelson finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.


It looks like Jean Francois Montcalm has been cut.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Montcalm is doing well to control the position and prevent Nelson from advancing to side control.
Nelson landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Montcalm is trying to get back to full guard.

Nelson looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Montcalm has momentary wrist control but Nelson slips an elbow through the middle.

Nelson wants to take a breather but Montcalm is having none of it.
Nelson thows a huge punch but Montcalm dodges it nicely.
Montcalm controlling the position for now.
Nelson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Nelson stalling away here and it's allowed Montcalm to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.

Nelson postures up in Montcalm 's guard and throws a big left but Montcalm blocks it.

Montcalm has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Nelson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Montcalm keeping moving, preventing Nelson from controlling successfully.
Montcalm is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Nelson stands up and waves to Montcalm to follow him.
Montcalm throws a head kick that misses.

Nelson swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Montcalm stuffs the takedown attempt from Nelson. Nelson gets slowly back to his feet.

Nelson gets the takedown into side control.
Nelson fails to land a wild elbow strike.

Montcalm tries to improve position but can't.

Nelson stands up.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Montcalm moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Montcalm just misses with a punch to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Nelson swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Montcalm counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Nelson!

Nelson wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Montcalm is now in half guard.

Montcalm decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Montcalm takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

Nelson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Montcalm was covering up waiting for the punch and Nelson finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Montcalm wants to stand but Nelson is controlling the position.
Nelson cracks Montcalm with a solid left hand.
Montcalm trying to keep a closed guard but Nelson is proving a slippery customer.

Nelson won't allow Montcalm to get back to his feet.
Nelson advances position into side control!
Montcalm takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Nelson landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Montcalm sneaks back into half guard.
Montcalm keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Montcalm is trying to maintain the position but Nelson is very close to passing his half guard.
Nelson is nestled in close to Montcalm , controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Nelson wants to stand but Montcalm has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Nelson content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Roy Nelson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Nelson is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
