Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Argivas Kerenzikov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Max Matthews! The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Chris Downing and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Matthews shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kerenzikov as he jumps to the side. Matthews wants to clinch up but Kerenzikov keeps it at a distance. Matthews on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Kerenzikov throws a sloppy head kick and Matthews moves out of range easily. Matthews dodges the punch combination from Kerenzikov.
Matthews bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Kerenzikov pivots, looking for a leg kick but Matthews is out of range and Kerenzikov settles back down. Kerenzikov throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Kerenzikov misses with a straight left. Kerenzikov swats away the attempt to clinch by Matthews. Matthews will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Matthews keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matthews throws a leg kick but Kerenzikov moved away. The crowd cheers as Kerenzikov lands an impressive looking overhand right. Matthews doesn't seem phased though.
It looks like Max Matthews has been cut. Matthews misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Argivas Kerenzikov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Max Matthews. Horrible takedown by Matthews or perhaps it was just good defense by Kerenzikov which made him look bad. Some bone on bone action there as Matthews checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one. Good work by Matthews as he checks the leg kick. Kerenzikov fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Matthews checks it well. Matthews shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it. Kerenzikov fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Matthews has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Matthews gets a takedown into half guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Matthews wants to control but Kerenzikov is keeping him busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kerenzikov gets back to full guard.
Kerenzikov keeping moving, preventing Matthews from controlling successfully. Kerenzikov is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Matthews wants to control from the top but Kerenzikov keeps moving. Matthews makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Matthews chips away with some ground and pound. Matthews trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Matthews has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Matthews got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kerenzikov has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Matthews has managed to get both his arms back between Kerenzikov's legs - danger averted. Matthews with a nice head shot there.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Matthews working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Kerenzikov's head. Matthews preventing the sweep. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kerenzikov trying to keep a closed guard but Matthews is proving a slippery customer.
Kerenzikov is looking for a triangle but Matthews pushes his legs off easily.
Matthews trying to control the position from guard on top but Kerenzikov is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Kerenzikov is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Matthews forces his way into half guard. Matthews perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Matthews is just content to waste time from the top position. Kerenzikov takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Matthews trying to control but Kerenzikov is working from the bottom. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Matthews accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Kerenzikov working a defensive guard here.
Matthews postures up in Kerenzikov's guard and throws a big left but Kerenzikov blocks it. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Matthews is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Matthews connects with a couple of short punches. Matthews postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Matthews is stalling in the full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matthews shoots in for a takedown but Kerenzikov shows good takedown defense. Matthews wants to clinch up but Kerenzikov keeps it at a distance. No luck with that takedown attempt from Matthews. Matthews throws a head kick that misses. Matthews has closed the distance and engaged Kerenzikov in a clinch.
Kerenzikov lands a glancing elbow in the clinch. Matthews on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Kerenzikov tries to work over Matthews's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target. Kerenzikov lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Matthews backwards. Matthews on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Kerenzikov lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards. Kerenzikov cracks Matthews with a nice body shot.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kerenzikov prevents a takedown attempt there.
Argivas Kerenzikov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Max Matthews. Matthews is breathing heavily. Kerenzikov stalls. Kerenzikov lands a nice elbow. The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows. Kerenzikov is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Matthews is defending well for now. Kerenzikov breaks the clinch.
Kerenzikov will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Matthews tries to move into range but Kerenzikov moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand. Matthews tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Kerenzikov manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Matthews shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kerenzikov pinned against the cage. Kerenzikov gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kerenzikov cracks Matthews with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Kerenzikov has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Matthews to stand back up!
Matthews is rocked! This has been an exciting period of action! Matthews takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Matthews is still on wobbly legs! Can Kerenzikov finish him? Kerenzikov looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.

It connects and Matthews has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. BAM! Kerenzikov delivers a spinning backfist that drops Matthews like a ragdoll! This is all oooooveeeer! He was out before he hit the ground!
