And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 42 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tony Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Williams dodges the punch combination from Mendez.
Williams dips to his left and cracks Mendez with an uppercut!
Williams will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Williams throws a head kick that misses.
Mendez walks into a left hand.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mendez shoots in for a double leg but Williams sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Mendez throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Williams cracks Mendez with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Williams has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Mendez to stand back up!

Williams misses with a hook. Mendez ducked under it nicely.
Mendez seems to have recovered his senses.

Mendez dives in and scores a takedown into Williams's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Mendez is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Williams.

Williams throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Mendez sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Williams leaves Mendez with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Simon Williams has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tony Mendez.
Mendez misses with a series of wild punches.

Mendez walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

It looks like Tony Mendez has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Williams moves out of range of the body kick.
Williams stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Williams wants it to stay on the feet.

Williams is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Williams is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Mendez closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Williams's guard.
Mendez won't allow Williams to sweep him here.
Mendez not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Mendez wants to pass the guard but Williams is keeping the position.
Williams has his hands on Mendez's head, controlling the position.
Mendez wants to control from the top but Williams keeps moving.

Mendez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Williams's waist but Williams gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mendez off to one side.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Williams. Mendez shrugs it off though.

Mendez feints and as Williams raises his hands in defense, Mendez changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Mendez wants to control from the top but Williams keeps moving.
Williams bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Mendez's guard.
Williams keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Mendez's head.
Williams lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Williams with a flurry of punches that miss.

Mendez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Williams defends it easily.
Mendez has momentary wrist control but Williams slips an elbow through the middle.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Williams accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Tony Mendez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mendez misses with a hook. Williams ducked under it nicely.
Williams cracks the inside of Mendez's front leg.

Williams cracks Mendez with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Williams has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Mendez to stand back up!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Williams throws an overhand right that drops Mendez like a sack of potatoes! Williams dives in to finish the fight with more strikes and this one is all over!
