Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Khan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cody Bowens! The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Emerson Jorge and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Khan with a poor takedown and Bowens counters with a nice double leg into side control. Khan won't be happy with that. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Khan tries to bench press Bowens off him but Bowens keeps the position. Bowens controls the position from side control. Bowens working the head and body with strikes. Khan is looking for a sweep. Bowens lands a decent elbow from side control. Bowens happy to just control the position for now. Khan is trying to improve his position. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Khan gets back to half guard. Khan looking for submissions off his back. Bowens is pressing down on Khan's thigh, looking to free his foot. Khan is holding on for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Khan looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Bowens looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Bowens seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. It looks like Bowens might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Khan makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Khan.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Khan has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Bowens is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Khan. Khan tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Bowens wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Bowens in side control, just content to control the action for now. Bowens is putting a hurting on Khan here, landing some big shots from side control. Khan is looking to regain half guard here but Bowens keeps moving and retains side control. Bowens scores with a couple of short elbows. Khan is looking for a sweep. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Khan is working hard here to advance position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Khan is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Bowens working over Khan with some ground and pound. Khan looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Khan is trying to get back to full guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Bowens seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Khan is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Bowens pulls his head out easily. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bowens looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Khan looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Bowens wants to free his trapped foot but Khan is holding on for dear life with his legs. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. This has been an exciting period of action! Bowens controlling the action here. Khan looking for submissions off his back. Khan actively working from the bottom here. Khan is breathing heavily. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Khan looking for a kimura from the bottom but Bowens passes into side control! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Cody Bowens dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Bowens shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Khan napping and manages to drive through into side control! Khan is looking for a sweep. Khan gets back to half guard. Khan is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Bowens is tapping! Great win for Khan!
