Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tim Jacobs! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Darrius Styles! The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Paul Gruel and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jacobs shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Styles looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Styles looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Jacobs sitting in guard here, content to control. Jacobs's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Styles keeping full guard, as Jacobs tries to pass. Jacobs is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Tim Jacobs just wasn't active enough. Jacobs stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jacobs wants it to stay on the feet. Styles is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Jacobs shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Styles sprawls well. Styles wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Jacobs gets slowly back to his feet. Styles slaps away a takedown attempt from Jacobs, before circling back to the center of the mat. Styles misses with a takedown attempt and Jacobs counters with a good low kick that Styles was not able to check. Jacobs shoots in and bounces Styles off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Jacobs scoring with punches to the head and body.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jacobs controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Tim Jacobs wasn't doing enough on the ground. Jacobs looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Jacobs stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Styles swivels though and keeps the full guard. Jacobs seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Jacobs works a leg free and moves into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Styles is looking for a sweep. Jacobs is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Jacobs looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Jacobs in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Styles tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Jacobs!
