PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between McGillicuddy Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kenji Okabe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, McGillicuddy Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 26 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kenji Okabe!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Chris Saunders and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Okabe tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Okabe fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Jones manages to avoid it.
The fighters circling - Jones throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Nice sprawl there from Jones as Okabe shoots in.
Jones misses with an uppercut. Okabe saw that one coming.
Jones attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Jones misses with a telegraphed body shot

and Okabe counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Jones's guard now.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Okabe is looking to advance position but Jones has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Okabe is trying desperately to improve position.
Jones tries to stand up but he's trapped just for the moment.
Okabe tries to hold on but Jones postures up.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Okabe really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Okabe is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Jones get's back to his feet.
Jones scores with a jab to the jaw.
Okabe throws out a powerful jab.
Jones throws a looping overhand right but Okabe ducks down to avoid it.
Okabe shoots in but Jones avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Okabe crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Jones - the referee stops the clock and Okabe gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Jones. Okabe manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Jones tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Okabe paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Okabe clobbers Jones with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Okabe scores with a sloppy right hand. Jones should have avoided that one.
Jones tries to clinch up but Okabe circles away and keeps his distance.
Okabe takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Nice shot lands for Okabe.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Okabe drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Okabe cracks Jones with a big elbow.
Jones is not content to let Okabe control the position.
Okabe scoring with punches from side control.
Okabe in side control, throwing shots but Jones defends.
Okabe prevents Jones from escaping the position.
Okabe throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Jones works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Okabe has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Okabe wants to take a breather but Jones is having none of it.

Jones is looking to escape.
Okabe throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Okabe throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Jones to regain full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Okabe chips away with some ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Okabe trying to control but Jones is working from the bottom.
Jones wants to stand up but Okabe is controlling him.
Okabe passes into half guard.
Jones wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Okabe is trying to control the action in half guard but Jones is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Okabe lands with a hook. Jones tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Donk. Jones catches Okabe right on the button with a cross.

Okabe throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Jones was covering up waiting for the punch and Okabe finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Okabe throws an elbow that misses. Jones uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Okabe's guard. Nice move by Jones!
Okabe tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Jones has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Okabe is proving hard to escape from.

You get the feeling that Jones really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Kenji Okabe has got the better of the ground game so far.
Okabe can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Jones is looking to escape.
Jones is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Jones holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Okabe tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Okabe lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

Kenji Okabe showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
