PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Pe Nish (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Akira Sono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Pe Nish!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Akira Sono!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sono's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Sono duly obliges.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Nish.

Nish lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Nish thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Sono's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nish drops an elbow to the side of Sono's head.
Nish wants to control but Sono is keeping him busy.

Nish could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Nish thows a huge punch but Sono dodges it nicely.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Nish thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Nish has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Nish is taking a breather. Sono says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nish throwing shots but Sono is blocking nicely.

Sono is staying active underneath Nish, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Sono looks like he's trying to stand up.

Nish passes to full mount!

Nish is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Sono can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Nish can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Sono is looking to escape.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sono is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Nish has taken the fight to the clinch.
Sono wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Nish is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Sono can't fight it off and eventually Nish manages to take the fight to the floor. Sono looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Sono looking to hit a scissor sweep but Nish is one step ahead there.
Nish trying to control the position from guard on top but Sono is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Nish is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Sono doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Nish.
Nish is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Nish is trying to work for a kimura but Sono is defending well.

Nish is trying to control the action in half guard but Sono is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Nish keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Sono tries to roll over but Nish keeps him under control.

Nish wants to control the pace but Sono is squirming around nicely.
Pe Nish overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Nish thowing shots but they're missing.
Nish lands a big shot there that rocks Sono but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Poor strikes thrown by Nish there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Nish has control of Sono's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Sono regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Nish lands a nice shot to the head.

Nish is working for a guillotine from mount but Sono frees his head quite easily.
Nish wants to control the pace but Sono is squirming around nicely.

Nish is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Sono to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Sono shrugs it off.
Sono is in all sorts of trouble here.
Nish tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Nish throwing strikes here but Sono is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sono wants to hold on but Nish pushes him away.

Nish working for a submission but Sono is keeping him at bay.
Nish misses with a head shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pe Nish dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Nish misses with a takedown attempt
and Sono counters with a straight right hand.
Sono throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Nish's head.
Nish shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Sono pinned against the cage. Sono gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Nish throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sono's waist but Sono gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Nish off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Pe Nish. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Nish pushes Sono up against the cage in a clinch.

Nish pulls guard effortlessly.
Nish keeping moving, preventing Sono from controlling successfully.
Sono must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Sono in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Nish on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Nish tries to get out of the position.
Sono wants to get up but he can't break Nish's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Sono is a very stocky fighter. Infact he's such a weird shape that he's almost like some sort of comedy character - it's hard to believe he's real.

Nish manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Nish misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Nish is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Sono is surviving well by controlling Nish's body position as best he can.
Nish thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Nish tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Nish has isolated one of Sono's arms. Sono looking to fight him off but Nish twists into an armbar. It's tight... Will he tap?? YES, he's tapped! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Pe Nish!
After winning the bout, Pe Nish thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
