Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jake Handson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jon Jones! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Yves DeLean and William Peck.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Handson shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Jones manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Jones working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Handson. Handson working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Jones looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Jones keeping full guard, as Handson tries to pass. Jones keeping moving, preventing Handson from controlling successfully.
Jake Handson has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. Jones avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Handson tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Jones holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Handson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Handson fails to land the takedown. Handson misses with a takedown and Jones holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Handson is breathing heavily. Handson is stalling here.
Handson turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Jones is looking for a sweep. Handson looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jones is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Handson is controlling him well. Handson wants to control for a moment but Jones uses the opportunity to move back to half guard. Jones is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Handson pulls his head out easily. Jones wants to get back to his feet. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Handson thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Jones's head. Jones is staying active underneath Handson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Handson blocks the strikes from Jones.
Jones works his way to full guard. Good work. Jones has Handson pulled in close to control his posture. Handson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Handson trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Jones had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Handson defends it easily. Handson wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Jones working a defensive guard but Handson manages to pass into side control anyway.
Handson tries to advance to mount but Jones denies him. You can see the frustration on Jones's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Handson gets to mount! Jones was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Jones is wriggling around trying to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jake Handson dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Handson defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Jones. Handson closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Jones is staying active underneath Handson, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Jones pushes Handson off looking to stand but Handson dives back in and keeps control.
Jones keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Handson works his way into side control. Jones is trying to control Handson's posture but Handson avoids it. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Handson remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
That's one minute gone in the round. Handson tries to stand but Jones is controlling his head. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Jones is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Handson's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Handson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Jones keeps working. Jones tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Handson manages to move to mount!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Handson lands a nice shot to the head. Jones is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Jones sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Handson seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Jones does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Jones wants to get back to full guard but Handson has mounted him! Handson takes Jones's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Jones is in trouble. Jones just trying to survive but Handson is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
That's three minutes gone in the round. What can Jones do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Handson seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Jones for as long as he can get away with. Handson scores with punches from the back.
Jones can't escape the position.
Handson is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Jones with him. Jones is trying to defend but Handson has an arm under the chin now! Jones grimaces and is forced to tap out!
