Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kirk Joseph! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joe Hoag! The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Roger Salmon.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Joseph fails with the takedown. Hoag fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Joseph to the ground. Hoag is now in Joseph's guard. Joseph keeping moving, preventing Hoag from controlling successfully. Hoag seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Joseph is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Joseph looking for a guillotine here but Hoag defends easily.
Joseph might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Hoag got a little sloppy there for a moment and Joseph has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hoag has managed to get both his arms back between Joseph's legs - danger averted. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Hoag sitting in guard, not really doing much. Hoag trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Joseph manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!
That's one minute gone in the round. Hoag is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Hoag is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Hoag can't keep his opponent in guard - Joseph advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Joseph is looking for a kimura but Hoag is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Joseph to get the leverage. Joseph is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Hoag has managed to free his arm - good work. Joseph stops Hoag from getting back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Joseph is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hoag is just riding it out for now. Joseph eventually gives up the hold. Hoag wants to control but Joseph is keeping busy and won't allow it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Joseph is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Joseph is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Joseph looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Hoag really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Joseph wants to control the pace but Hoag is squirming around nicely. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Joseph avoids the attempt from Hoag to control. Hoag really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Joseph. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Joseph scoring with strikes but Hoag is staying in there. Hoag is bucking up trying to escape but Joseph cracks him with another couple of good strikes. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Joseph prevents Hoag from getting the reversal. Joseph in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Joseph cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Hoag is rocked! Joseph swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Kirk Joseph! Kirk Joseph decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
