PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Edward Newgate (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hunter Brewer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Edward Newgate has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Edward Newgate seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Edward Newgate!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Hunter Brewer!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Colin Fray and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some wild striking there from Brewer.
Newgate throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Newgate has a takedown stuffed.
Newgate fails with a takedown attempt.

Brewer scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
The strikes coming from Brewer are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Newgate really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Brewer wants to lay and pray for a moment but Newgate keeps working.
Brewer wants to stand but Newgate is controlling his arm.
Brewer working the ground and pound.
Newgate tries to improve position but can't.

Brewer prevents Newgate from escaping the position.

Newgate is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Newgate regains half guard there - taking advantage of Brewer's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Newgate has his hands clasped together around Brewer's back. He's all about the action.

Brewer wants to take a breather but Newgate is having none of it.
Brewer prevents Newgate from standing back up.
Newgate wants to control but Brewer is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Newgate is staying active underneath Brewer, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Edward Newgate just wasn't active enough.

Newgate looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Newgate prevents Brewer from improving his position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Newgate is trying to control. Brewer wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Brewer is looking to control Newgate's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Brewer avoid being mounted?
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Newgate tries for a takedown but Brewer sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Edward Newgate. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Newgate shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Brewer's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Edward Newgate will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Newgate tries a head kick but it misses.
Brewer shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Newgate but Newgate pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Brewer tried to score with a low kick but Newgate checks it.
Newgate shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Brewer counters with a thumping low kick.
Newgate wants to clinch up but Brewer keeps it at a distance.

Brewer drives through with a takedown into guard.
Newgate wants to stand and escape but Brewer is having none of it.

Newgate looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Newgate bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Brewer's guard.
Brewer wants to stand and escape but Newgate is having none of it.

Brewer working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Newgate doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Newgate manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Newgate is looking to stand up but Brewer won't let him.
Newgate seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Newgate has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Edward Newgate overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Brewer thows a huge punch but Newgate dodges it nicely.

Brewer has gone for a leg lock! Newgate slips out almost immediately though and dives into Brewer's guard.
Newgate works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Newgate prevents Brewer from improving his position.
Newgate moves into full mount! Brewer won't be happy about that!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Newgate throws out a loose jab but Brewer uses good head movement to avoid it.
Newgate tries to clinch there but Brewer circles away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Brewer is defended easily by Newgate.
Newgate moves in looking to clinch but Brewer pushes him off.
Brewer stuffs the takedown attempt from Newgate. Newgate gets slowly back to his feet.
Brewer lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Newgate looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Brewer is fending him off so far but Newgate persists. Nope, Brewer circles away and we're back to standing.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Brewer tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Newgate smiles and moves away.
Brewer avoids the head kick by Newgate.
Newgate tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Brewer manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Newgate throws a head kick that misses.
Newgate closes the distance looking to clinch
and Brewer counters with a three punch combo that has Newgate backing up. Newgate nods at Brewer to acknowledge the strikes.

Newgate scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Brewer blocking the ground and pound attempt from Newgate.
Brewer is trying to maintain the position but Newgate is very close to passing his half guard.
Brewer wants to stand back up but Newgate manages to pass into side control.
Newgate wants to control but Brewer is keeping him busy.

Newgate is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Brewer is trying to escape and Newgate transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Brewer is forced to tap! Nice work there by Newgate! Very nice indeed!
