Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kwaku Sherk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pope comes to the cage accompanied by Welcome to the Jungle. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Daniel Pope! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kwaku Sherk! The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Jorge Garcia and Joseph Jones.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pope fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Sherk manages to avoid it. Sherk stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sherk wants it to stay on the feet. Sherk manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Pope on his heels. He'll look to pass Pope's guard now, I'm sure. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Sherk controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Sherk keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Pope's head. Sherk controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Sherk passes Pope's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Pope is trying to control but can't.
Pope is looking to improve his position.
Sherk seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Pope tries to get to full guard but Sherk has control of the leg. Sherk sitting and controlling from the half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sherk is thwarting Pope's attempts to control the position.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Sherk shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Sherk wants to control but Pope is keeping him busy. Sherk looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Pope actively working from the bottom here. Pope tries to roll over but Sherk keeps him under control. Sherk looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Sherk's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Sherk should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sherk winds up and cracks Pope with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Pope looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Sherk is looking to advance position but Pope won't allow it. This has been an exciting period of action! Sherk is looking to take a break and control but Pope is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Pope has hold of Sherk's hands but Sherk slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pope regains full guard. Nicely done. Sherk pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Pope is keeping the position for now. Sherk throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Pope works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Sherk got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pope has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sherk has managed to get both his arms back between Pope's legs - danger averted. Sherk landing with the ground and pound. Pope working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sherk doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sherk manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sherk postures up and lands a big shot to Pope's brow. Sherk postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Pope has his foot on Sherk's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sherk works his way back into a safe position though. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sherk's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Sherk controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sherk working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Pope's head. Sherk must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Sherk stands up over Pope, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Pope is rocked! Sherk working some strikes from top position. Oh Pope is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Sherk postures up from his opponent's guard, before exploding into some vicious ground and pound! Pope covers up, he's hurt! Sherk keeps throwing the strikes, glancing at the referee... Will he stop it?? One more big shot from Sherk and the ref steps in to end the fight! Sherk can't hide his delight as he celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Kwaku Sherk!
