The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pirrup looks for a takedown but Dawson sprawls well.
Pirrup fails with a takedown attempt.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Pirrup.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Phillip Pirrup. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nice sprawl there from Dawson as Pirrup shoots in.
Pirrup with a lazy takedown attempt
and Dawson counters with a good low kick that Pirrup was not able to check.
Pirrup feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Pirrup tries to free his leg and advance position but Dawson is retaining full guard.
Pirrup controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Dawson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pirrup doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pirrup manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pirrup postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Pirrup lands a couple of elbows.
Pirrup has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Pirrup's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Pirrup chips away with some ground and pound.
Pirrup looking to pass the guard.
Pirrup not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Pirrup is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Pirrup is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Dawson flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Pirrup is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Pirrup is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
BOOM! Pirrup connects with a massive shot to the dome!

Dawson is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

Pirrup takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Dawson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pirrup. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Pirrup swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
