PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Eric Hall (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steven Stewart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stewart is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Hold On. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Eric Hall!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steven Stewart!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Anthony Taglia and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hall gets tackled into the cage by Stewart. Stewart maintains the clinch.

Stewart breaks the clinch.
Hall tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Stewart manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Hall tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Stewart paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Hall fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Hall misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Hall shoots in but Stewart avoids the takedown attempt easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Eric Hall. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Stewart gets a takedown into half guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Stewart is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hall gets full guard.

Hall keeping moving, preventing Stewart from controlling successfully.
Hall really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Stewart trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hall pulls Stewart in close to prevent any damage.
Stewart has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Hall has momentary wrist control but Stewart slips an elbow through the middle.
Hall controls Stewart momentarily but Stewart frees himself.
Stewart is stalling in the full guard.
Stewart tries to free his leg and advance position but Hall is retaining full guard.
Stewart is working Hall over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Stewart is looking to pass into half guard but Hall pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Hall is in guard.
Stewart is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Hall is controlling him.
Stewart avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Hall loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Stewart wants to stand but Hall is controlling the position.
Hall wants to control from the top but Stewart keeps moving.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Eric Hall.
Hall tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Stewart manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Hall.

Stewart moves into the clinch.
Stewart managing to block the knees to the body from Hall.
Hall goes for a takedown attempt but Stewart pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Stewart feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Stewart in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Stewart stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hall swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hall keeping moving, preventing Stewart from controlling successfully.

Steven Stewart has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Stewart shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Stewart throws a strike but Hall rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Stewart keeping moving, preventing Hall from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steven Stewart dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Stewart clinches.
Stewart tries to land a knee to the head but Hall blocks with his arms.
Hall tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Stewart breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A nice inside leg kick there by Stewart. That's going to slow Hall down.
Stewart throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Hall.
Hall shoots and misses
and Stewart counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Hall moves into the clinch successfully.

Stewart breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hall ducks right into an uppercut from Stewart.
Steven Stewart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hall looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Hall is looking to clinch.

Stewart closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hall's guard.
Stewart tries to free his leg and advance position but Hall is retaining full guard.
Stewart loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Hall throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Stewart escapes and throws Hall's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Stewart is staying tight to Hall's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Stewart trying to control the action but Hall is working from the bottom.
Hall is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Stewart is controlling him well.

Stewart tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Hall taking punishment in the form of punches.
Stewart throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Stewart lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Stewart is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Hall has escaped the position, nice work there.
Stewart creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Hall sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Hall is trying to control Stewart's posture but Stewart avoids it.

Stewart stands up.
Stewart fails to land with a series of punches.
Eric Hall is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Nice body punch from Stewart.
Hall misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Stewart throws a series of strikes that have Hall backpedaling.
Stewart throws a nice looking combination but Hall bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Stewart throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Some bone on bone action there as Hall checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Stewart looks for a takedown but Hall sprawls well.
Horrible takedown by Hall or perhaps it was just good defense by Stewart which made him look bad.

Stewart has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Hall uses from the top position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Stewart throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Stewart shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Hall defends it nicely.
Hall misses with a body kick.

Stewart rushes Hall and presses him up against the cage.
Hall has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Stewart avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Hall tries to pull guard but Stewart holds him up against the cage and eventually Hall drops back down to his feet.
Hall jumps guard but Stewart stands there with Hall around his waist. Hall gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Hall is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Stewart is defending well.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Hall drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Hall is looking to break free of the clinch but Stewart has double underhooks.
Hall tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Stewart escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Stewart cracks the inside of Hall's front leg.
Hall shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Stewart but Stewart pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Stewart ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Hall shoots and misses

and Stewart counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Hall's guard now.
Hall will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Stewart controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Hall controls Stewart momentarily but Stewart frees himself.
Stewart controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Hall looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Stewart lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Stewart buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Stewart throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Hall's waist but Hall gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Stewart off to one side.
Hall looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Stewart throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Some wild striking there from Stewart.
Hall avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Hall has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Stewart.

Stewart has closed the distance and engaged Hall in a clinch.

A frustrated look appears on Stewart's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Hall wants to break the clinch but can't.

Stewart manages to break the clinch.
Decent striking displayed by Stewart there.
Hall shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Stewart but Stewart pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Stewart scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Steven Stewart is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Stewart rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Hall moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Stewart forces Hall back against the cage and clinches.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Stewart escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Stewart wants to land a leg kick but Hall is out of range.
Eric Hall has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Stewart feints a jab promting Hall to slip. Stewart then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Hall slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

And that's the end of the fight!
Steven Stewart comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Stewart has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
