PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kale Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Oleg Vasiliev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cruz comes to the cage accompanied by Welcome to the Jungle. Vasiliev comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Russian Barakuda kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Oleg Vasiliev has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kale Cruz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Oleg Vasiliev!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Robert Douchet and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vasiliev changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cruz tries to avoid it but Vasiliev manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cruz to the ground. Cruz escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Cruz throws a body punch but Vasiliev moves out of range.
Vasiliev closes the distance and clinches up with Cruz, looking for a takedown. Vasiliev pushes Cruz against the cage but Cruz circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Kale Cruz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cruz misses the shot to the body.
The fighters circling - Cruz throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Cruz throws a nice looking combination but Vasiliev bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Vasiliev gets the takedown into side control.

Vasiliev tries for a kimura but Cruz is defending well.

Cruz is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Vasiliev off and has taken his back!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Cruz throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Cruz has his hands on Vasiliev's head, controlling the position.
Cruz bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Vasiliev's guard.
Cruz is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Vasiliev wants to improve his position but instead Cruz has moved into half guard.
Well, if Cruz is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Vasiliev is looking for a sweep. Cruz is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

It looks like Oleg Vasiliev has been cut.
Vasiliev moves out of range as Cruz strikes.

Vasiliev shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cruz as he jumps to the side.

Cruz attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Kale Cruz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Oleg Vasiliev.
The fighters circle momentarily. Cruz darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

Vasiliev looks for a takedown but Cruz sprawls well.

Vasiliev is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Cruz throws a hook to the side of Vasiliev's head but Vasiliev sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Cruz drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Cruz is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Vasiliev lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Cruz!
Vasiliev sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Vasiliev moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Cruz has worked his arm free - good work by Cruz!

Vasiliev swings around for an armbar but Cruz sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Vasiliev's guard.

You can see the frustration on Vasiliev's face as Cruz controls the position.

Cruz seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Vasiliev for as long as he can get away with.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cruz's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Well Cruz has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
