PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paul James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Chon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Daniel Chon will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Paul James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Daniel Chon!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Yukihiro Shimada and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chon scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Chon has managed to clinch.
James wants a takedown.
James wants a takedown.

James is trying to trip Chon. He has hold of a leg but Chon is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. James persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
James prevents Chon from getting back to his feet.
James throwing strikes but missing.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as James accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
James trying to control but Chon is working from the bottom.
James throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Chon works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Chon is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst James is controlling him.
James postures up in Chon's guard and throws a big left but Chon blocks it.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as James accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
James is looking to work some ground and pound but Chon has wrist control.

James missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
James throws a strike but Chon rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
James keeping moving, preventing Chon from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
James is trying to keep Chon in close.
Chon stops James from standing up.
James has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Chon wants to control from the top but James keeps moving.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
James wants to stand up but Chon is controlling him.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Daniel Chon was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Chon comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
James closes the distance and clinches up with Chon, looking for a takedown. James pushes Chon against the cage but Chon circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Paul James. That's going to take a lot out of him.
James avoids the body shot from Chon.
James fails with the takedown.
James changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chon tries to avoid it but James manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chon to the ground. Chon escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Chon misses with a series of wild punches.

James moves out of range of the body kick from Chon.
James shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Chon defends it nicely.
Chon swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

James gets tackled into the cage by Chon. Chon maintains the clinch.
Chon is pressed up against the cage. James has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Chon down to the mat. Chon avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
James has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Chon fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Chon shoots in for a double leg but James sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
A combination from Chon does no damage.

Chon closes the distance and clinches.
James has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Chon avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
James tries for a takedown. No joy.
Chon tries to circle away but James has him pinned against the cage.
Chon is trying to break free.
James wants a takedown but no success here.
James tries to score a body lock takedown but Chon shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Chon is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Chon jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as James walks away with a smile on his face. Chon gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Daniel Chon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Chon misses with a jab, cross combination.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Daniel Chon dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Chon tries a head kick but it misses.
Chon thows a body shot but no joy.
James looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Paul James is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A punch combination from Chon misses.
James blocks a head kick by Chon.
James tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Chon swivels and escapes.
James moves out of range of the leg kick from Chon.
Chon misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Chon throws a push kick but James slaps the foot to one side.

No luck for Chon with that takedown attempt.
Chon misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Chon misses with a jab, cross combination.
Chon misses with the combination.
Chon slaps away a takedown attempt from James, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Paul James. That's going to take a lot out of him.
James takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Daniel Chon seems to be getting the better of the standup.

James has hold of one of Chon's legs. Chon is fighting the takedown attempt but James gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

James with a flurry of punches that miss.
James postures up and lands a big shot to Chon's brow.
James postures up in Chon's guard and throws a big left but Chon blocks it.
Chon wants to stand but James is controlling the position.

James could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Chon controlling James's posture.

Chon is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and James defends well.

Chon is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! James has his hands clasped together but Chon extends an breaks James's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Chon.
