Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Martos Santos! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Derek Santiago! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Daniel Cesar and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Horrible takedown by Santiago or perhaps it was just good defense by Santos which made him look bad. Santos drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Santiago tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Santos wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Santiago is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Santos working away. Santiago is trying to improve his position. Santos in side control lands a decent elbow. Santos stands up and we're back to a striking position. Santiago misses with a body kick. Santos tries to clinch but Santiago moves out of range. Santos tries to clinch up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Santos doesn't succeed with the takedown and Santiago counters with a nice kick to the body. Santiago shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Santos but Santos pushes him off and we're back to square one. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Santiago. Martos Santos has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Derek Santiago. Santos bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Santiago is looking for a sweep. Santiago looks gassed! Santos trying to control the position but Santiago is working away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Santiago tries to bench press Santos off him but Santos keeps the position. Santos is looking to take a break and control but Santiago is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Santos controlling the position from side mount.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Santos lands with a nice combination. Santiago backs away looking to recover. Santos lands a with a good body shot. Santos fails with the takedown and Santiago counters with a nice double leg into side control. Santos won't be happy with that.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Santos is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Santiago's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Still in half guard, Santiago seems content to control. Santiago trying to mount his opponent but Santos defends it. Santiago is looking to take a break and control but Santos is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Santiago wants to work for an arm triangle but Santos is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Santiago tries to pass the half guard into mount. Santos knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Santiago has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Santos defend it? Santiago steps over the head and cranks it - Santos is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Santiago!
