PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Chris Darker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Raul Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 1, fighting out of London, Chris Darker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Raul Rodriguez!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Chris Edwards and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rodriguez tries a head kick but it misses.
Rodriguez scores with a leg kick.

Rodriguez dives in and scores a takedown into Darker's guard.
Rodriguez slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Darker wants to control but Rodriguez postures up.
Darker is looking to reverse the position.
Darker tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Darker is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Rodriguez looking to control and managing it successfully.
Rodriguez tries to control but Darker wriggling away.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rodriguez controlling his opponent.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Raul Rodriguez.

Rodriguez looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Darker!
Darker is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Rodriguez's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Darker is staying active underneath Rodriguez, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Rodriguez is working for a submission of some sort.
Rodriguez is nestled in close to Darker, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Rodriguez stands up from half guard.

Darker shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rodriguez as he jumps to the side.

Darker tries to keep at a distance but Rodriguez has taken the fight into the clinch.
Rodriguez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Rodriguez misses with an elbow over the top.
Rodriguez is looking for a takedown.
Darker is pressed up against the cage. Rodriguez has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Darker down to the mat. Darker avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Darker scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Rodriguez drives through and clinches with Darker against the cage.
Rodriguez lands a hook to the side of the head.
Rodriguez keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Darker's efforts to push away.

Darker tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Rodriguez smiles and moves away.
Darker doesn't manage to clinch there - Rodriguez circles away.
Darker tries to clinch up but Rodriguez circles away and keeps his distance.
Rodriguez shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Darker defends it nicely.
Chris Darker has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Raul Rodriguez.
Darker shoots in for a takedown but Rodriguez shows good takedown defense.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rodriguez changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Darker tries to avoid it but Rodriguez manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Darker to the ground. Darker escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Darker closes the distance and clinches.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Raul Rodriguez dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Rodriguez tries to clinch up
and Darker counters with a two punch combo.

Rodriguez fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Darker to the ground. Rodriguez is now in Darker's guard.
Darker lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Rodriguez!
Rodriguez is looking to improve his position but Darker isn't that keen on the idea.
Rodriguez sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Darker is looking to advance position but Rodriguez won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rodriguez blocking the ground and pound attempt from Darker.
Darker trying to control from half guard but Rodriguez is working away.
Rodriguez wants to control but Darker is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Rodriguez tries to roll over but Darker keeps him under control.
Darker is looking to take a break and control but Rodriguez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Raul Rodriguez has got the better of the ground game so far.

Rodriguez makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Rodriguez shoots in looking for a takedown. Darker tries to sprawl out of it but Rodriguez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Darker manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Darker tries to clinch up.
Rodriguez looks to throw the jab but Darker is out of range.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is breathing heavily.
Darker manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Darker looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Rodriguez wants to control but Darker is keeping him busy.
Rodriguez thows a huge punch but Darker dodges it nicely.
Darker is not content to let Rodriguez control the position.
Rodriguez sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Darker defending well though.
Rodriguez is trying to control the action in half guard but Darker is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Darker might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Rodriguez working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Rodriguez content to control rather than advance.

Darker makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Darker shoots in and drives through. Rodriguez sprawls well.

Rodriguez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Rodriguez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Rodriguez slows the pace down.
Rodriguez misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Rodriguez passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Darker!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Darker in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Rodriguez lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Raul Rodriguez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Darker's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Rodriguez looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Rodriguez fails with the takedown.
Darker doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Rodriguez counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Rodriguez moves nicely into side control.
Rodriguez postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Rodriguez has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Darker fails to land the takedown.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Darker fails with an attempt to clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Darker tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Rodriguez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Rodriguez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Rodriguez closes this distance looking for a takedown but Darker circles away.
Chris Darker has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Raul Rodriguez.
Darker tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rodriguez swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Rodriguez tries for a takedown but Darker sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

A head kick by Darker misses

and Rodriguez counters with a shoot takedown. Darker fights it but they end up in guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Darker is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Rodriguez is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Darker has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Rodriguez is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Darker.
Darker is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Rodriguez wants to control but Darker is keeping him busy.

Rodriguez decides to stand back up. Rodriguez steps back and let's Darker get back to his feet.

Rodriguez closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Darker did well to prevent Rodriguez getting side control.
Rodriguez is trying to control. Darker wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Darker is looking for a sweep. Rodriguez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Darker trying to hold on to Rodriguez's head to control him but Rodriguez postures up.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Rodriguez escapes and gets back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rodriguez wants to clinch up but Darker keeps it at a distance.

Rodriguez shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Chris Darker has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Raul Rodriguez is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Darker tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

And that's the end of the fight!
Raul Rodriguez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Rodriguez winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
