The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Aleksandr Martynov and Vladimir Khabensky.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Opperman looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Opperman fails with the takedown.
Washington takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Opperman tries to clinch but Washington is having none of it.
Washington is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
No luck for Opperman with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mouritz Opperman. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Washington drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Opperman stops Washington from passing to mount.
Washington cracks Opperman with a big elbow.
Opperman sneaks back into half guard.

Washington throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Opperman was covering up waiting for the punch and Washington finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Opperman pulls Washington in close to prevent any damage.

Washington wants to control from the top but Opperman keeps moving.
Washington looking to sit in guard and control but Opperman gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Washington has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Washington tries to strike from the bottom.
Opperman postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Opperman lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Opperman gets to his feet - Washington follows without any prompting.
Washington looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Opperman is fending him off so far but Washington persists. Nope, Opperman circles away and we're back to standing.

Washington tries to pull guard but Opperman holds him up against the cage and eventually Washington drops back down to his feet.

Washington manages to break the clinch.
Mouritz Opperman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Washington keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Opperman shoots in looking for a takedown. Washington tries to sprawl out of it but Opperman keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Washington manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Opperman is breathing heavily.
The fight stays on the outside here - Opperman looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Washington gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Washington's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Opperman looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Nice takedown defense from Opperman. No joy for Washington on that attempt.

That was a close round but I would say that Mouritz Opperman will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Opperman tries to close the distance and clinch up but Washington swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Washington is looking to slow Opperman down with leg kicks.
Washington works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Washington shoots in for a takedown but Opperman shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Opperman closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Washington unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Opperman is working for takedown but Washington is calmly controlling the position for now.
Washington misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Opperman using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Washington has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Washington shoots in for a double leg but Opperman sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Opperman throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Opperman lunges at Washington with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Washington's hand.
Washington will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Mouritz Opperman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mace Washington.

Washington lands with a nice body kick.
Washington tries to close the distance and clinch up but Opperman swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Washington breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Washington has closed the distance and engaged Opperman in a clinch.

Opperman ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Opperman no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

I would just about give that final round to Mace Washington.
