Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Benson Henderson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Anthony Pattis! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Chris Downing and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Henderson shoots in but Pattis avoids the takedown attempt easily. Pattis throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Henderson was covering up waiting for the punch and Pattis finishes the takedown easily into guard. Henderson looking for a guillotine here but Pattis defends easily.
Henderson has a closed guard, preventing Pattis from standing up. Pattis trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Pattis slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Henderson looks to move to half guard but instead Pattis has passed into mount! Damn! Pattis unloading with bombs!
That's one minute gone in the round. Pattis putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound! Henderson slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Henderson is staying active underneath Pattis, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Henderson is trying to get back to full guard. Pattis is thwarting Henderson's attempts to control the position. Pattis lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Pattis tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Henderson.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pattis is working for a submission of some sort.
Pattis is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Henderson manages to get to full guard. Pattis trying to control the position from guard on top but Henderson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Henderson controls Pattis momentarily but Pattis frees himself. Henderson looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pattis trying to control the position from guard on top but Henderson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Henderson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Pattis is aware though and is defending well. Pattis stopping the sweep attempt from Henderson. Pattis working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Henderson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pattis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pattis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Henderson keeping moving, preventing Pattis from controlling successfully.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pattis slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Henderson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pattis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pattis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Pattis controlling from the top position. Henderson has his foot on Pattis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Pattis works his way back into a safe position though. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Pattis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Anthony Pattis dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Pattis pushes Henderson up against the cage in a clinch. Pattis prevents a takedown attempt there.
Pattis gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Henderson.
Henderson drops down looking for an ankle pick but Pattis pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Benson Henderson. That's going to take a lot out of him. Pattis shoots in for a takedown but Henderson shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Pattis darts in trying to clinch and Henderson counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Henderson.
That's one minute gone in the round. Henderson prevents Pattis from getting back to his feet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Pattis trying to control the position.
Henderson looking to sit in guard and control but Pattis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Henderson is on top in guard.
Pattis looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Henderson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Pattis is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Henderson, into his guard. Pattis is working Henderson over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pattis chips away with some ground and pound. Henderson working for a triangle but Pattis defends it easily.
Pattis wants to stand but Henderson is controlling his posture from full guard. Pattis trying to control the position from guard on top but Henderson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. This has been an exciting period of action!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Henderson throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Pattis passes into half guard under a barage of strikes. Pattis wants to pass the guard but Henderson is defending well. Pattis is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Henderson is just riding it out for now. Pattis eventually gives up the hold. Henderson looking for submissions off his back. Anthony Pattis has got the better of the ground game so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pattis is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Henderson doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Pattis. Henderson tries to get to full guard but Pattis has control of the leg. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Henderson gets back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Benson Henderson will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!
Pattis keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Pattis throws a sloppy head kick and Henderson moves out of range easily. Henderson tries to close the distance and clinch up but Pattis swats him away and circles back towards the center. Benson Henderson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Henderson tries to clinch but Pattis moves out of range. Pattis plants his feet and lands a nice head kick! A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pattis. Pattis looks to land a combination. Henderson sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. Henderson stuffs the takedown. Henderson is looking to clinch. Benson Henderson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Henderson closes the distance and clinches up with Pattis, looking for a takedown. Henderson pushes Pattis against the cage but Pattis circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Henderson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Pattis but Pattis pushes him off and we're back to square one. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Benson Henderson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pattis clinches up against the cage. Pattis decides to pull guard. Pattis wants to sweep but no luck. Pattis takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Henderson wants to control from the top but Pattis keeps moving. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Benson Henderson just wasn't active enough. Henderson misses with a takedown and Pattis counters with a head kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pattis tries to close the distance and clinch up but Henderson swats him away and circles back towards the center. Nice sprawl there from Henderson as Pattis shoots in. Henderson looks for a takedown but Pattis sprawls well. Henderson closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Pattis's guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Pattis keeping busy, throwing shots from the bottom. Pattis is trying to keep Henderson in close.
Henderson looking to sit in guard and control but Pattis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Henderson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pattis not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Anthony Pattis has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Henderson has a takedown stuffed.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Henderson tries to clinch but fails miserably and Pattis counters by clinching up. Pattis changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Henderson fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Henderson fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Pattis avoids it really well and circles away. Pattis tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Henderson swivels and escapes. Henderson shoots in for a takedown but Pattis shows good takedown defense. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Henderson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Pattis sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Henderson somewhat. Henderson walks forward, straight into a front kick from Pattis.
And that's the end of the fight! Anthony Pattis comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Pattis has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
