Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Briggs Lovejoy! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Ruas! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Matheus Silva and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lovejoy misses with a head kick.
Ruas moves into range and clinches up with Lovejoy. Lovejoy is trying to trip Ruas. He has hold of a leg but Ruas is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Lovejoy persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Ruas wants to sweep but no luck. Lovejoy trying to control but Ruas is working from the bottom. Lovejoy is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Ruas is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Ruas avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Lovejoy trying to control but Ruas is working from the bottom.
We're going to have a standup here because Briggs Lovejoy wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Lovejoy closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Ruas quickly recovers to half guard. Lovejoy looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Ruas avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Lovejoy. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Ruas is looking for a sweep. Lovejoy is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Lovejoy is working for a submission of some sort.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ruas wants to improve his position but Lovejoy is controlling well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ruas is looking to control Lovejoy's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Ruas avoid being mounted? Lovejoy wants to pass to mount but Ruas is defending the position. Ruas is trying to stand.
Lovejoy sitting and controlling from the half guard. Ruas is staying active underneath Lovejoy, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Briggs Lovejoy has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. Ruas shoots in and drives through. Lovejoy sprawls well. Ruas clinches with his opponent.
Ruas pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
That's two minutes gone in the round. No luck for Ruas with that takedown attempt. Matheus Ruas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Ruas forces Lovejoy back against the cage and clinches. Ruas escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Lovejoy fails in his attempt to clinch. Ruas has taken the fight to the clinch.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily. Ruas wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Ruas shoots in and drives through. Lovejoy sprawls well. Briggs Lovejoy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matheus Ruas. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Ruas shoots in for a takedown but Lovejoy shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Lovejoy closes the distance and clinches. Lovejoy keeps control of Ruas as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lovejoy changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Ruas fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Lovejoy finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Ruas with a lazy takedown attempt so Lovejoy counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Ruas is pulling down on Lovejoy's head to control his posture. Ruas avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Lovejoy seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Lovejoy loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Lovejoy trying to control the position from guard on top but Ruas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Briggs Lovejoy has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. Ruas shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Lovejoy as he jumps to the side. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Ruas paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Ruas. Ruas steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Lovejoy. Lovejoy drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Ruas trying to control but Lovejoy flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back! The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Ruas has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke. Good control from Lovejoy. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Briggs Lovejoy dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Lovejoy gets a double leg takedown into Ruas's guard. Lovejoy decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Ruas avoids a kick to the body.
Lovejoy defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Ruas. Ruas tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Lovejoy manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Lovejoy fails with an attempt to clinch.
Ruas scores with a one two! Lovejoy had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes. Briggs Lovejoy is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Lovejoy manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Ruas on his heels. He'll look to pass Ruas's guard now, I'm sure. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Ruas manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Ruas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lovejoy. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Lovejoy is wriggling around trying to escape.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ruas can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Lovejoy is looking to escape. Lovejoy working to try and regain half guard.
Ruas tries to control but Lovejoy wriggling away. Lovejoy is looking to improve his position but Ruas isn't that keen on the idea. Lovejoy wants to hold on but Ruas pushes him away. Ruas controlling from mount. Ruas can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Lovejoy is looking to escape.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ruas controlling his opponent. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ruas is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Lovejoy has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Lovejoy! Ruas looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Matheus Ruas has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Ruas pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Lovejoy back to the cage. Ruas follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Ruas misses with a hook. Lovejoy ducked under it nicely. Ruas moves into range and clinches up with Lovejoy. Lovejoy keeps control of Ruas as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. Ruas breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Ruas fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Ruas throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Lovejoy's waist but Lovejoy gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ruas off to one side. Briggs Lovejoy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matheus Ruas. Ruas is breathing heavily. Lovejoy misses with a few strikes there.
Ruas gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Lovejoy counters with a nice double leg into half guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Lovejoy is controlling the pace.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ruas wants to improve his position but Lovejoy is controlling well.
Lovejoy tries to stand and escape but Ruas is controlling the position. Lovejoy is stalling here. Ruas is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Lovejoy seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Ruas has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Ruas prevents Lovejoy from escaping the position. Lovejoy is looking for a sweep. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Briggs Lovejoy will probably get the nod. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
Ruas misses with a takedown attempt - Lovejoy sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Ruas throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Excellent takedown into side control there by Lovejoy. Lovejoy wants to lay and pray for a moment but Ruas keeps working. Briggs Lovejoy overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Ruas is trying to improve his position. You can see the frustration on Ruas's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Lovejoy tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Ruas is looking for a sweep. Lovejoy trying to control the position but Ruas is working away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lovejoy staying calm. Lovejoy tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. Ruas tries to control but Lovejoy manages to take his back. A lull in the action here.
Ruas is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Lovejoy off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted. Lovejoy working for a choke but Ruas is defending well. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Ruas looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lovejoy keeps control of the position as Ruas tries to break free.
Lovejoy is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round. I really don't envy Ruas right now.
Ruas prevents Lovejoy from getting a body triangle. Lovejoy has his opponent's back and is working for the choke. Ruas is in bad spot here.
Ruas covering up well under a barage of strikes. Lovejoy doesn't have the hooks in and Ruas manages to turn into his guard.
Ruas not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Ruas wanted to stand there but Lovejoy had control of the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lovejoy trying to keep a closed guard but Ruas is proving a slippery customer.
Lovejoy is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Ruas gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Matheus Ruas seems to be getting the better of the standup. Ruas wants to clinch up but Lovejoy keeps it at a distance. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Lovejoy drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Ruas working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lovejoy doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lovejoy manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Lovejoy stopping the sweep attempt from Ruas.
And that's the end of the fight! Briggs Lovejoy showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Lovejoy, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
