Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between William Gate (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joshua James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joshua James told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, William Gate!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Joshua James!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Yukihiro Shimada and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gate doesn't succeed with the takedown

and James counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Gate!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
James taking a breather here.
Gate tries to improve position but can't.

James tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
James in side control, just content to control the action for now.
James tries to stand but Gate is controlling his head.
James really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gate. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Gate is looking for a sweep.

Gate wants to control but James postures up.
Gate takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

Gate wants to work for an arm triangle but James is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

James is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
James looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Gate is sneakily working for an arm triangle but James sees it coming and defends easily.
James is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Gate has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can James defend it? Gate steps over the head and cranks it - James is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Gate!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:35 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). William Gate!
William Gate was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
