Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Danny Wilkinson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Mick Griffin! The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Donald Grub and Chris Edwards.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wilkinson shoots in for a double leg but Griffin sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Wilkinson fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Wilkinson shoots in and bounces Griffin off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Griffin looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Wilkinson puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Griffin is looking to improve his position.
Wilkinson working over Griffin with some ground and pound. Griffin looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Griffin gets full guard. Wilkinson throwing strikes from guard but Griffin blocks nicely. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Griffin is striking from the bottom but Wilkinson uses the opportunity to pass into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Griffin keeps control of the position for the meantime. Wilkinson is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Griffin defends it well. Griffin tries to kick Wilkinson off but Wilkinson keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Griffin has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Wilkinson escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Wilkinson! Griffin gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Griffin is looking to improve his position.
Wilkinson wants to stand up but Griffin is controlling the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Griffin is trying to control but can't.
Griffin moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Wilkinson has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Griffin striking off his back but it's not causing Wilkinson any problems. Griffin wants to hit a switch here but Wilkinson passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Griffin there! Griffin sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Griffin is trying to stand up here but Wilkinson is controlling him well. Griffin flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Griffin is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Wilkinson pulls his head out easily. Griffin looks gassed! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Wilkinson looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Danny Wilkinson dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Nice sprawl there from Griffin as Wilkinson shoots in. Griffin with a lazy takedown attempt and Wilkinson counters with a single leg into guard. Griffin didn't expect that. Wilkinson postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Wilkinson won't allow Griffin to sweep him here. Wilkinson gets to his feet - Griffin follows without any prompting. Griffin is breathing heavily. Griffin gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Griffin has a closed guard, preventing Wilkinson from standing up. Griffin looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Griffin keeping moving, preventing Wilkinson from controlling successfully. Griffin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Wilkinson gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Griffin slips a straight right by Wilkinson. Wilkinson clinches with his opponent.
Wilkinson ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Wilkinson no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Griffin looking to sit in guard and control but Wilkinson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Wilkinson wants to pass the guard but Griffin is keeping the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wilkinson trying to control the position from guard on top but Griffin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Wilkinson postures up.
Griffin looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Griffin had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Wilkinson is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Griffin Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Wilkinson's back instead. Griffin is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Wilkinson defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Wilkinson just trying to survive but Griffin is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish. Griffin has his opponent's back but Wilkinson is looking to stand. He manages to get to his feet and shakes off Griffin. Griffin misses with a takedown attempt and Wilkinson counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Griffin! Wilkinson stands up from mount. Strange move. Wilkinson pushes Griffin up against the cage in a clinch. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Danny Wilkinson dominated that second round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!
Wilkinson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Griffin tries to avoid it but Wilkinson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Griffin to the ground. Griffin escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Wilkinson darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Griffin tries to roll over but Wilkinson keeps him under control. Griffin actively working from the bottom here. Wilkinson could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Wilkinson wants to advance to full mount but Griffin doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
That's one minute gone in the round. Griffin looking to control.
Griffin will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Wilkinson drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Griffin manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Wilkinson has Griffin in his guard. Griffin stands up and waves to Wilkinson to follow him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Wilkinson throws a series of punches but Griffin avoids them all with ease. Wilkinson tries to close the distance and clinch up but Griffin swats him away and circles back towards the center. Wilkinson doesn't succeed with the takedown and Griffin moves into the clinch. Griffin breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Griffin lands with a kick to the temple. Wilkinson shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?" Griffin doesn't succeed with the takedown and Wilkinson counters with a nice double leg into guard. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Griffin is on top in guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Griffin throws and elbow that misses. Wilkinson uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Griffin's guard. Nice move by Wilkinson! Wilkinson wants to get up but he can't break Griffin's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Wilkinson stopping the sweep attempt from Griffin. Griffin is looking for a triangle but Wilkinson pushes his legs off easily.
Danny Wilkinson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Wilkinson prevents Griffin from getting back to his feet. Wilkinson won't allow Griffin to sweep him here. Griffin is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Griffin keeping moving, preventing Wilkinson from controlling successfully.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Wilkinson darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
And that's the end of the fight! Danny Wilkinson showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Wilkinson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
