PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nichi Hong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rafael Santa Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Santa Cruz comes into a darkened arena with his song building. 50 cent P.I.M.P kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Rafael Santa Cruz is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Nichi Hong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rafael Santa Cruz!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Bruno Lombardi and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice jab there from Hong.
Santa Cruz tries to clinch up but Hong circles away and keeps his distance.
Hong connects with a solid leg kick.
Santa Cruz throws a head kick that Hong semi-blocks.
Hong thuds his right hand into Santa Cruz's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Santa Cruz is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Hong has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Hong!

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Santa Cruz tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Hong manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Santa Cruz shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hong as he avoids it easily.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Rafael Santa Cruz showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Hong goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Hong takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Hong got a little sloppy there for a moment and Santa Cruz has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hong has managed to get both his arms back between Santa Cruz's legs - danger averted.

Santa Cruz drops back, looking for a kneebar! Hong looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Hong looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Hong!

Hong stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Rafael Santa Cruz is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Hong misses with a low kick.

Hong smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Santa Cruz tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Hong paws at him with a jab and circles away.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Nichi Hong.
I think Santa Cruz has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
