Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steve Menzies! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Baby Blue! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, John Mangel and Summer Carpenter.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Menzies is looking to clinch. Menzies tries to clinch but Blue moves out of range. Blue throws a hook to the side of Menzies's head but Menzies sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Steve Menzies seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Blue avoids a punch combination nicely.
Menzies has a takedown stuffed. Nice shot lands for Blue. Nice straight punches there by Blue. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Blue. Menzies throws a hook but Blue avoids it easily. Menzies tries to close the distance and clinch up but Blue swats him away and circles back towards the center. Menzies moves in looking to clinch but Blue pushes him off. Blue takes a swing at Menzies's ribcage but misses. Blue throws a lazy right hand but Menzies sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Menzies swings widly with a right hand
and Blue makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Menzies throws a right hand that misses
and Blue counters with a lovely shot to the body. Blue throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Menzies.
That's one minute gone in the round. Menzies connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Menzies rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Blue moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Blue closes the distance and clinches. Menzies is looking to break free of the clinch but Blue has double underhooks. Blue breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Blue lands with an uppercut that bounces Menzies off the cage and back into range. A looping hook to the body misses from Blue. Menzies does a little dance to reset his feet. Blue slips under a jab. Blue throws a 1-2 combo that connects squarely on Menzies's jaw, knocking him onto his back! Blue dives in looking to finish as Menzies flails his arms in a desperate attempt to block Blue's strikes! Blue is raining down hammerfists and the ref stops it! Menzies's desperate flailing just didn't constitute intelligent defence. Some people will probably question the ref's decision but Menzies was definitely hurt and the ref saved him from taking unnecessary punishment. A fighter's safety is paramount in this sport.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:47 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Baby Blue!
