PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between James Jorge (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Freddy Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jorge comes into the arena with Back in black blaring out of the sound system. Alves is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Trik Turner - Friends and Family. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Freddy Alves was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, James Jorge!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Freddy Alves!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Felipe Paraventi and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alves throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Jorge.
Jorge misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Alves takes a swing at Jorge's ribcage but misses.
Jorge swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Jorge throws out a powerful jab.
Alves walks into a jab.
Alves swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Jorge.


It looks like James Jorge has been cut.

Alves closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Alves controls the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Jorge controls the position for a moment.
Jorge tries to improve position but can't.
Jorge can't do much from the bottom here.
Jorge tries to bench press Alves off him but Alves keeps the position.

Alves is staying tight to Jorge's torso, preventing him from escaping.
You can see the frustration on Jorge's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Jorge lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Alves circles away quickly and effectively.

Jorge shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Alves is trying to defend but Jorge finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Jorge breaks from Alves's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Jorge landing strikes from the mount and Alves is in trouble!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Jorge tries to control but Alves wriggling away.
Alves tries to lock up and control but Jorge gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Alves wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Jorge.

Alves is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Jorge avoids the attempt from Alves to control.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Jorge is really struggling to control Alves but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Jorge lands a couple of good shots and Alves has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

I really don't envy Alves right now.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Alves defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Jorge's arms.

Alves throws a right and a left that both miss.
Jorge throws a series of punches but Alves moves out of range.
James Jorge is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

and Alves counters with a left and a right that hurts Jorge! He wobbles and falls to the floor - he's in big trouble! Alves jumps into full mount!

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Jorge tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Alves punishing his opponent with strikes.
Oh Jorge is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Jorge bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Alves manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Jorge manages to get himself to full guard.
Jorge seems to have got his legs back now.

Jorge is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Jorge has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jorge chips away with some ground and pound.

Jorge pushes down on Alves's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Alves is looking to improve his position.
Jorge seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Alves does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Jorge controlling the pace.
Jorge seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Alves for as long as he can get away with.

Jorge wants to control from the top but Alves keeps moving.

James Jorge has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Jorge looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Alves is fending him off so far but Jorge persists. Nope, Alves circles away and we're back to standing.
Jorge takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
James Jorge seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

enabling Jorge to counter with a crisp jab.
Jorge tries to close the distance and clinch up but Alves swats him away and circles back towards the center.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Jorge has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Alves is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Alves thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Alves seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Alves winds up and cracks Jorge with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Alves is taking a breather. Jorge says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
James Jorge overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Alves is keen to just control but Jorge is a slippery customer.

I would just about give that final round to Freddy Alves.
I think Alves has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
