PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nathin Q (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Yochanan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Yochanan has chosen Know your Enemy as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Nathin Q!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, David Yochanan!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Ryoma Takatsuka and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yochanan shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Q as he avoids it easily.
Yochanan fails with the takedown

and Q counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Q throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Yochanan works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Q missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Q works over Yochanan with some ground and pound from guard.
Q is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Q has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Q trying to control but Yochanan is working from the bottom.
Yochanan is pulling down on Q's head to control his posture.

Yochanan is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Nathin Q.

Yochanan throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Q tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Yochanan is in Q's guard.

Q has his foot on Yochanan's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Yochanan works his way back into a safe position though.
Q has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Yochanan has passed into side control.
Yochanan scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Q to see if he's OK.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Q bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Yochanan has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. David Yochanan wasn't active enough on the ground.

and Q decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Yochanan's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Yochanan keeping moving, preventing Q from controlling successfully.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Yochanan not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Yochanan wants to get back to his feet but Q is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Q looking to sit in guard and control but Yochanan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Q manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Yochanan tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Q manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Yochanan wants to clinch up but Q keeps it at a distance.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Yochanan is defended easily by Q.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Yochanan.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Yochanan shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Q's guard.

Q had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Yochanan defends it easily.

Q isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Yochanan stacks Q on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Yochanan!
Q is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Yochanan thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Q's head.
Q is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Q is trying to maintain the position but Yochanan is very close to passing his half guard.

Yochanan got a little sloppy there for a moment and Q has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Yochanan has managed to get both his arms back between Q's legs - danger averted.

Q looking for a guillotine here but Yochanan defends easily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Q has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Yochanan is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Q.

Q manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Yochanan must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Q is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Yochanan tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Yochanan has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Yochanan throws a lazy right hand but Q sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Yochanan looks to land a combination but Q avoids it well.

We're going to have a standup here because Nathin Q wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Yochanan misses with a takedown attempt - Q sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Nathin Q has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of David Yochanan.

Q shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Q was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Nathin Q showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Q, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
