Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jackson Thompson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mikhail Sarbinov! The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Donatello Bradman and Damien Edna.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sarbinov fails with a takedown attempt. Mikhail Sarbinov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A decent looking cross lands there for Thompson. Sarbinov closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Sarbinov looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Sarbinov throws a strike but Thompson avoids it easily and moves to full guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sarbinov throwing strikes but missing. Thompson is trying to control the position but Sarbinov postures up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sarbinov distracts Thompson with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Sarbinov trying to control but Thompson is working from the bottom. Thompson is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Sarbinov passes Thompson's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Sarbinov moves nicely into side control. Sarbinov is looking to take a break and control but Thompson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Thompson prevents Sarbinov from improving position. Thompson manages to get back to half guard. Sarbinov drops an elbow to the side of Thompson's head. Sarbinov is looking to take a break and control but Thompson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Sarbinov seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Sarbinov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Thompson keeps working.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Thompson is looking to control Sarbinov's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Thompson avoid being mounted? Thompson is refusing to be controlled, as Sarbinov sits in half guard. Thompson tries to get to full guard but Sarbinov has control of the leg.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Thompson fails with a takedown attempt.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Thompson throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Sarbinov has his takedown stuffed and Thompson counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Sarbinov tries to keep at a distance but Thompson has taken the fight into the clinch. Thompson drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Sarbinov gets the underhooks and prevents it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Thompson tries for a takedown but Sarbinov manages to get underhooks.

Sarbinov looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Sarbinov passes easily into side control. Nice work. Thompson is not content to let Sarbinov control the position. Sarbinov tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Thompson tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Sarbinov wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sarbinov tries to advance to mount but Thompson denies him. Sarbinov working away. Thompson is working to avoid the ground and pound but Sarbinov connects with a decent elbow. Sarbinov throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Sarbinov taking a break here but Thompson is having none of it and regains half guard. Sarbinov wants to work for an arm triangle but Thompson is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Sarbinov is breathing heavily. Sarbinov is just content to waste time from the top position. Thompson takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Sarbinov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Thompson swivels though and keeps the full guard. Sarbinov trying to control the position from guard on top but Thompson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Thompson looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Sarbinov avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Sarbinov bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sarbinov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Thompson keeps working. Thompson manages to work his way to half guard, despite Sarbinov's best efforts. Sarbinov is working for a kimura but Thompson is defending it quite comfortably.
Sarbinov takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Thompson is looking to control Sarbinov's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Thompson avoid being mounted?
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Sarbinov trying to control the action but Thompson is working from the bottom. Sarbinov is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Mikhail Sarbinov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Thompson won't allow Sarbinov to sweep him here. Thompson wants to control from the top but Sarbinov keeps moving.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sarbinov is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Sarbinov bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Thompson's guard. Sarbinov drops back, looking for a kneebar! Thompson looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Thompson looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Thompson! Sarbinov is looking for a sweep. Sarbinov holding on.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sarbinov is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Thompson's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Thompson is tying to control. Sarbinov wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Sarbinov trying to control but Thompson postures up.
Sarbinov is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Thompson pulls his head out easily. Sarbinov wants to control but Thompson is keeping busy and won't allow it. Jackson Thompson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Sarbinov is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Thompson's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Thompson's back!
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jackson Thompson. I think Sarbinov has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
