Wensink comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Momma Said Knock You Out kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Yonah Yongsaklai! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Wensink! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, George Francis and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Yongsaklai throws a head kick but Wensink moves out of range.
Wensink dives in and scores a takedown into Yongsaklai's guard. Yongsaklai is pulling down on Wensink's head. It's preventing any offense from Wensink, at least for the moment. Wensink controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Wensink in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Wensink loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Yongsaklai pulls Wensink in close to his closed guard and prevents Wensink from doing any damage or advancing position. Wensink is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Yongsaklai controls Wensink momentarily but Wensink frees himself. Wensink throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Wensink postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Yongsaklai pushes Wensink off and gets back to his feet.
Wensink looks to land a left hand but Yongsaklai moved out of range nicely. Yonah Yongsaklai is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Yongsaklai tries to close the distance and clinch but Wensink swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Wensink connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Wensink scores with a takedown into Yongsaklai's guard. Wensink wants to stand but Yongsaklai has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Wensink landing with the ground and pound. Yongsaklai has control of Wensink's left arm, preventing Wensink from doing any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Yongsaklai wants to hit a switch here but Wensink passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Yongsaklai there! Yongsaklai is working to get back to half guard.
Wensink thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Yongsaklai's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. Yongsaklai wants to hold on but Wensink pushes him away. Wensink tries to control but Yongsaklai wriggling away. Wensink lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Wensink unloads with some shots from mount but Yongsaklai bucks and avoids them well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wensink scoring with strikes but Yongsaklai is staying in there. Wensink lands a big shot there that rocks Yongsaklai but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Yongsaklai is rocked! Yongsaklai takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Wensink's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:31 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Wensink! After winning the bout, John Wensink thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
