PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Saunders (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Masaru Hideki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Saunders kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Fort Minor - Remember the Name. Hideki has chosen I've Just Seen a Face as his entrance music. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 1 - 2, fighting out of London, John Saunders!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 27 - 10 - 2, fighting out of London, Masaru Hideki!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Phil Schofield and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A low kick from Saunders misses

and Hideki counters with a nice double leg into side control. Saunders won't be happy with that.
Hideki tries to advance position but instead Saunders slips a leg back in to half guard.
Hideki wants to pass the guard but Saunders is defending well.
Hideki not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Hideki missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Saunders avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Hideki.
Hideki has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Hideki working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Hideki lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Hideki throws a strike but Saunders avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Hideki loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Hideki throws an elbow that misses. Saunders uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hideki's guard. Nice move by Saunders!
Saunders will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Hideki tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Saunders looking to sit in guard and control but Hideki gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Hideki postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Hideki is looking to work some ground and pound but Saunders has wrist control.
Saunders wants to get back to his feet but Hideki passes into half guard.

Saunders is doing well to control the position and prevent Hideki from advancing to side control.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hideki connects with a nice short shot to Saunders's temple.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Saunders is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Hideki works his way into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
You can see the frustration on Saunders's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Saunders parries the strikes from Hideki easily there. Hideki is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Saunders to escape.

Hideki lands an elbow.
Hideki misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Hideki misses with the ground and pound.
Saunders can't do much from the bottom here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hideki throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Hideki lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Saunders down.
This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hideki throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Hideki just content to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Saunders's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Saunders avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Saunders really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Saunders turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Hideki connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

Saunders stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Hideki.
Saunders tries to land a front kick but Hideki steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Saunders throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

Hideki misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Saunders.
Saunders throws a hook but Hideki blocks it.
Hideki moves into range and connects with a jab.


It looks like John Saunders has been cut.
Saunders misses with a straight right.
Saunders looks to land a body kick but Hideki moved away.
Saunders doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Saunders closes the distance and clinches.
A left hand lands to the body for Hideki.
Hideki is trying to maintain a safe position but Saunders gets an underhook and turns Hideki into the cage.
Hideki lands with a right to the head.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Hideki as Saunders tries to tie him up.

Hideki stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hideki lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Saunders or not.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

A battle for position here, against the cage.

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Hideki creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

Hideki breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Saunders will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Hideki scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Saunders takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Hideki scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Saunders doesn't seem bothered though.
Hideki slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Saunders throws a shot from downtown. Hideki moves away and avoids it.

Hideki fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Saunders.

Saunders is rocked!

Hideki is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Oh Saunders is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Hideki has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hideki is in close to Saunders's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Hideki postures up in Saunders's guard and throws a big left but Saunders blocks it.

Hideki is pushing down on Saunders's leg trying to pass to half guard. Saunders is fighting to maintain full guard but Hideki has managed to sneak the leg through.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Hideki thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Saunders's head.

Masaru Hideki showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Hideki throws a right and a left that Saunders avoids nicely.

Saunders takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Saunders doesn't manage to clinch there - Hideki circles away.
Saunders moves forwards but Hideki connects with a nice, crisp jab.

Saunders takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

John Saunders has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Hideki works to advance to full mount. Saunders defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Hideki lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Masaru Hideki is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.


John Saunders's cut is getting worse.

Hideki takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Saunders is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes.

And that's the end of the fight!
Masaru Hideki comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Hideki has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A very excited looking Masaru Hideki made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
