Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, George Gilbert! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, James Martain! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Steve Erwin and Eliza Hachem.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gilbert shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Martain sprawls well. Martain wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gilbert gets slowly back to his feet. Oh, that's a big right hand from Gilbert and Martain goes tumbling to the canvas! Gilbert follows him to the ground and looks to finish from half guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Gilbert is keen to just control but Martain is a slippery customer. It looks like Gilbert is going to stand back up.
Martain pushes Gilbert off looking to stand but Gilbert dives back in and keeps control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gilbert is looking for a kimura but Martain is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Gilbert to get the leverage. Gilbert is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Gilbert gets to his feet - back to striking we go! Gilbert avoids a punch combination nicely.
Gilbert has closed the distance and engaged Martain in a clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gilbert looks to throw an elbow but misses. Martain is looking to break free of the clinch but Gilbert has double underhooks. Gilbert breaks the clinch.
James Martain is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Martain throws a series of punches but Gilbert avoids them all with ease. Gilbert waves his right hand out in front of him, looking to distract Martain. Oh, he's unloaded a beast of a left hand - it worked! He's dropped Martain to the canvas! Can he finish him!?
Martain is rocked! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Gilbert loads up on a big left hand. Martain felt that one! He's just covering up now, not defending himself intelligently - Gilbert looks towards the ref and unloads with 3 more big shots and the ref has no choice but to stop the fight! Martain can't hide his disappointment, as Gilbert celebrates the victory.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). George Gilbert!
