The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sobral shoots for a takedown but Rodriguez saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. No luck for Sobral with that takedown attempt. Sobral tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Rodriguez clinches up with Sobral and pushes him back against the cage. A hook to the body from Rodriguez.
Rodriguez gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. Sobral controls Rodriguez momentarily but Rodriguez frees himself. Rodriguez pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sobral is keeping the position for now. Rodriguez is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Rodriguez should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Rodriguez drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Sobral manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Rodriguez has Sobral in his guard. Rodriguez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Rodriguez wants to sweep but no luck.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sobral keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Rodriguez's head. Rodriguez looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Rodriguez had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Sobral is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Rodriguez Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Sobral's back instead. Rodriguez looks gassed! Sobral trying to control the hands but Rodriguez won't let him. Sobral breaks Rodriguez's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Rodriguez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sobral can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sobral passes easily into side control. Nice work. Sobral working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
