PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Odin Sons (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roman Reigns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reigns has chosen john as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Odin Sons!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Roman Reigns!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Anni Minnemäki and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Reigns looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Sons lands with a hook. Reigns tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Reigns drops his hands momentarily and Sons takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Reigns throws the kick towards the body but Sons avoids it.
Sons tries for a takedown but Reigns sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Sons circles away from the clinch attempt.
Sons throws a wild body kick that Reigns sees coming a mile off.
Sons uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Reigns.
Reigns throws a low kick but Sons avoids it.

Reigns rushes Sons and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Reigns is trying to break the clinch but Sons is controlling him.
Sons lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Sons wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Sons is trying to break the clinch but Reigns is controlling him.
Reigns tries to break the clinch but Sons is controlling the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Sons manages to break the clinch.

Reigns shoots in and bounces Sons off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Reigns stands and steps away. Sons gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Sons could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Reigns shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Sons napping and manages to drive through into side control!
You can see the frustration on Sons's face as Reigns controls the position.
Sons knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Reigns on the ground.

Reigns stands up.

Sons gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Reigns to score an easy takedown into full guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Reigns is pushing down on Sons's leg trying to pass to half guard. Sons is fighting to maintain full guard but Reigns has managed to sneak the leg through.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Reigns is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Reigns decides to stand up.
Reigns throws a head kick but Sons moves out of range.
Sons shoots in for a takedown but Reigns shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Roman Reigns seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sons is breathing heavily.
Reigns wants to clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Reigns moves in looking to clinch but Sons pushes him off.

Reigns looking to score a takedown here. Sons is defending well but Reigns drives through and ends up in Sons's guard.
Reigns passes Sons's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Reigns uses his free foot to push down on Sons's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Sons.
Reigns takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Reigns forces the positional change into back control.
Reigns is riding his opponent, not letting Sons buck him off.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Reigns's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sons trying to control the action but Reigns just sinks the hooks in.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

OK we're going to have a standup here. Roman Reigns hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Reigns wants to slow Sons down by chopping away at his legs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Roman Reigns dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Reigns throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Sons was covering up waiting for the punch and Reigns finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Reigns distracts Sons with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Reigns passes Sons's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Reigns works his foot free and advances to mount.
Reigns raining down hammerfists from mount.
Reigns sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Reigns lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Sons hang on?

Reigns gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Sons wants to clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Reigns shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Reigns was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Reigns decides to stand up, so the ref orders Sons to his feet.

Sons gets caught flat footed, as Reigns shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Reigns slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Reigns is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Reigns advances nicely into full mount.

Reigns stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Reigns misses with a body kick.
Reigns throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Reigns closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Reigns takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Reigns is trying for a kimura here. Sons looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Reigns wins by kimura!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Roman Reigns!
Roman Reigns decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
