Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Maxwell Church! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, James Hodges! The judges for this bout are William Gold, Donald Grub and James Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Horrible takedown by Church or perhaps it was just good defense by Hodges which made him look bad. Hodges looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Church closes the distance and clinches up with Hodges, looking for a takedown. Church pushes Hodges against the cage but Hodges circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Church looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Hodges is fending him off so far but Church persists. Nope, Hodges circles away and we're back to standing. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maxwell Church. That's going to take a lot out of him. The fighters circle momentarily. Hodges darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Church looks frusrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Church misses with a few strikes there.
Church really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Some wild striking there from Church.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Church looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Hodges is fending him off so far but Church persists. Nope, Hodges circles away and we're back to standing. Church shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Hodges pinned against the cage. Hodges gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Nice takedown defense from Hodges. No joy for Church on that attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Church shoots in and drives through. Hodges sprawls well. Hodges looks to score with a jab to the body but Church is just out of range. Hodges stuffs the takedown attempt from Church. Church gets slowly back to his feet. Church shoots in but Hodges avoids the takedown attempt easily. Hodges throws a nice outside leg kick. Hodges circles away from the clinch attempt.
Church throws a body punch but Hodges moves out of range.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Church fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Hodges decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Church is pressing down on Hodges's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Church manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hodges manages to get himself to full guard.
Church wants to pass the guard but Hodges is keeping the position. Church slips nicely into half guard. Church is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Hodges has managed to free his arm - good work. Church is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Hodges defends it well. Church looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Hodges with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Church trying to control from half guard but Hodges is working away. Church looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Church frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Church tries to control but Hodges wriggling away. Hodges is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Church has taken his back.
Church has both hooks in and is working for a choke. Hodges is in real trouble here. Church gets an arm under the chin and tightens the submission attempt... is this the end? Yes, Hodges is tapping out! Church wins by rear naked choke!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:03 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Maxwell Church!
