Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Chris Bates! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Phil Payne! The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Bruno Lombardi and Jorge Garcia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bates uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Payne. Payne misses with a straight left. Bates moves out of range of the strikes. Payne swings for the body but Bates moves out of range.
Payne misses with a jab, cross combination.
Bates walks into a straight right hand from Payne. Payne lands with a right hand. Payne circles away from the clinch attempt.
Bates tries to clinch but Payne moves out of range. Bates avoids the body shot from Payne.
Payne swats away the attempt to clinch by Bates. Payne scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Bates tries to close the distance and clinch up but Payne swats him away and circles back towards the center. Bates uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Payne. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Bates closes the distance and clinches up with Payne, looking for a takedown. Bates pushes Payne against the cage but Payne circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Bates throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Payne sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Payne wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Bates throws a lazy right hand but Payne sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Payne misses with an uppercut. Bates darts in and clinches Payne up against the cage. Bates lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Bates prevents Payne from breaking the clinch. Payne wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Bates has him pressed against the cage. Bates lands a nice elbow.
It looks like Phil Payne has been cut. Payne swings wildly with an uppercut but Bates uses good head movement to avoid it. A battle for position here, against the cage. Bates missing with knees to the body.
Payne breaks from the clinch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Bates is defended easily by Payne. Payne with a jab.

and Bates counters with a straight punch to the midsection. This has been an exciting period of action! Bates showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Payne.
Payne throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Bates sees it coming and avoids it easily. Payne scores with a jab. Bates acknowledges it with a nod of the head. No joy there for Payne, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Bates feints and as Payne raises his hands in defense, Bates changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Payne is looking to stand back up but Bates counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Payne. Bates thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Payne's head. Bates is trying to control the action in half guard but Payne is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Bates is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Payne is looking for a sweep. Bates is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Payne trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Payne wants to control but Bates is having none of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Bates thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Payne keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Payne is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Bates scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Payne?
Bates has hold of Payne's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Payne manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bates looking to finish Payne with some ground and pound. This is bad for Payne! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Payne tries to lock up and control but Bates gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Bates lands a couple of good shots and Payne has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
That has opened up Phil Payne's cut even more. Payne trying to control the hands but Bates won't let him. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. A lull in the action here.
Payne trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Payne is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

That was a close round but I would say that Chris Bates will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Phil Payne's cut. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
The fight stays on the outside here - Bates looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Payne throws an overhand right that lands on Bates's shoulder, as Bates tries to avoid the shot. Payne lands with a nice body punch. Payne cracks Bates with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Payne stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Payne wants it to stay on the feet. Bates tries to clinch up but Payne circles away and keeps his distance. Payne throws a predictable looking body shot
and Bates counters with a straight right hand. Bates slips under a jab from Payne. Payne tries to bum rush Bates with a series of wild strikes but Bates uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Payne scores with a hook. Payne takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Payne thows a left - swing and a miss!
That's one minute gone in the round. A telegraphed right hand from Payne misses the target. Bates ducks under a wild hook from Payne. Payne takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
The crowd cheers as Payne lands an impressive looking overhand right. Bates doesn't seem phased though. Payne throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Payne displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Bates. Payne stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush. No joy there for Payne, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Bates tries to close the distance and clinch up but Payne swats him away and circles back towards the center. Bates takes a body punch but keeps moving. Nice uppercut lands for Bates. That snapped Payne's head back.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. No luck for Bates with that takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chris Bates. That's going to take a lot out of him. Payne misses with a hook.

The fighters circling - Payne throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Payne looks to score with a jab to the body but Bates is just out of range. Bates is rocked! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Bates slips under a jab. Payne bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Bates's head. Oh Bates is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Payne throws a series of punches but Bates avoids them all with ease. Payne lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Payne lands a left and a right that send Bates crashing to the mat, dazed. Payne thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet! The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Payne swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Payne swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Bates keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Payne. Payne takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bates scores with a jab to the jaw. Payne throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Payne is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot. Bates closes this distance looking for a takedown but Payne circles away. Bates looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that. Bates looks up at the clock. Bad move! Payne lands a right hand from hell, dropping Bates. Payne pounces and finishes the fight with a flurry of punches and elbows.
