Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jack Shipman! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Daniel Powell ! The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Chad Campbell and Steve Montenegro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Shipman is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Powell fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Shipman sprawls well initially but Powell persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Powell prevents Shipman from improving his position. Powell is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Shipman is just riding it out for now. Powell eventually gives up the hold. Shipman might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Powell with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Shipman actively working from the bottom here. Shipman is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Powell pulls his head out easily. Shipman looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Powell is thwarting Shipman's attempts to control the position. Shipman is doing well to control the position and prevent Powell from advancing to side control. Powell is trying to control the action in half guard but Shipman is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Shipman is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Powell 's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Powell 's back! The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Shipman's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Shipman tightening his grip on Powell , looking for the choke. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Shipman working for the rear naked choke here. He's got one arm under but Powell is defending well. A couple of punches soften him up though and Shipman has tightened the hold! This one could be all over! It is! Powell taps out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Jack Shipman! Jack Shipman took to the mic after the fight and begged the organizational hierarchy for a shot at the title.
