PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mick Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Giorgio Abbiati (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Abbiati's choice of entrance music: Don't Speak - Eagles of Death Metal. Giorgio Abbiati has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mick Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Giorgio Abbiati!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, William Peck and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Penn feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Penn wants to control from the top but Abbiati keeps moving.
Abbiati avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Abbiati wants to stand up but Penn is controlling him.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Penn sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Abbiati's guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Penn connects with a nice short shot to Abbiati's temple.

Penn is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Penn scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Abbiati blocking the ground and pound attempt from Penn.
Penn passes the guard and advances to mount!
Penn trying to control but Abbiati is having none of it.
Penn with a couple of short strikes.
Abbiati working to try and regain half guard.
Penn landing strikes from the mount and Abbiati is in trouble!
Penn has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Penn with a couple of short strikes.
Abbiati in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Penn punching from mount but Abbiati doing a good job of avoiding damage.

Penn is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Abbiati can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Penn throwing strikes but Abbiati bucks up and reverses the position. He's now in guard on top.

Penn is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Abbiati controlling from the top position.
Penn is adopting a defensive guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Penn controlling the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Abbiati tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Abbiati takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

and Penn counters with a combination of strikes to the head and body that crumple Abbiati!


Abbiati is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Penn wants to pass the guard but Abbiati is defending well.
Abbiati is still in real trouble! Can Penn finish him?
Abbiati on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Penn tries to pass to full mount but Abbiati defends it.
Abbiati is refusing to be controlled, as Penn sits in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn uses his free foot to push down on Abbiati's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Abbiati.
Abbiati seems to have recovered his senses.
Penn pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Penn scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Abbiati?
Penn loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Abbiati scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Penn land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Penn stands and salutes the crowd.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:53 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mick Penn!
Mick Penn really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Revolution Fatigues logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
