Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Chael Gracie! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Roman Szczeniak! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Thiago Cunha and Emerson Jorge.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Szczeniak showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Gracie.
Szczeniak circles away from the clinch attempt.
Gracie doesn't manage to clinch there - Szczeniak circles away.
Szczeniak fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Gracie dives in and grabs Szczeniak's left leg, looking for a takedown. Szczeniak pushes down on Gracie's head and hops out. Gracie fails with an attempt to clinch.
Gracie wants to clinch. Gracie closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Szczeniak gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Szczeniak is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Gracie is controlling the pace.
Szczeniak wants to get back to his feet. Gracie takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Gracie is working for a kimura but Szczeniak is defending it quite comfortably.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Szczeniak trying to control but Gracie postures up.
Szczeniak looking for submissions off his back. Gracie tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Gracie wants to control but Szczeniak is keeping him busy. Szczeniak is looking for a sweep. Gracie is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Gracie is stalling here. Szczeniak is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Gracie seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Szczeniak has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. You can see the frustration on Gracie's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Szczeniak staying calm.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gracie is looking for a sweep. Gracie can't do much from the bottom here. Szczeniak working the ground and pound from side control. Szczeniak working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Gracie tries to improve position but can't. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Szczeniak working away. Gracie takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Gracie is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Szczeniak is just content to waste time from the top position. Gracie takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Gracie is pulling down on Szczeniak's head. It's preventing any offense from Szczeniak, at least for the moment. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Chael Gracie will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Szczeniak gets caught flat footed, as Gracie shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Szczeniak tries to strike from the bottom.
Gracie sitting in guard here, content to control. Szczeniak keeping moving, preventing Gracie from controlling successfully. Gracie is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Chael Gracie. Szczeniak doesn't succeed with the takedown and Gracie counters with a left and a right that stings Szczeniak.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Szczeniak fails with a takedown attempt. Szczeniak scores with a takedown into Gracie's guard. Gracie utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Szczeniak trying to control but Gracie is working from the bottom. Gracie can't keep his opponent in guard - Szczeniak advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Gracie trying to control but Szczeniak postures up.
Gracie is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Szczeniak pulls his head out easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gracie is looking to control Szczeniak's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gracie avoid being mounted? Szczeniak takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Szczeniak missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Szczeniak is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Gracie is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Szczeniak is tapping! Great win for Gracie!
