PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Phil Masters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tarec Shumanov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Phil Masters has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Phil Masters!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Tarec Shumanov!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Anni Minnemäki and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Masters gets a takedown into half guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Shumanov wants to get back to full guard.
Masters controlling the pace.
Shumanov wants to control but Masters is keeping busy.
Masters knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Shumanov on the ground.
Masters will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Masters looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Shumanov is pressing down on Masters's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Masters trying to control the position from guard on top but Shumanov is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Shumanov can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Masters controls the pace.
Masters wants to pass the guard but Shumanov is keeping the position.

Shumanov working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Masters doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Masters manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Masters has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Shumanov is trying to control the position but Masters postures up.
Masters missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Shumanov tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Masters loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Shumanov wants to sweep but no luck.
Masters's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Masters has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Shumanov should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

Phil Masters has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Shumanov stuffs the takedown.

Shumanov tries to clinch there but Masters circles away.
Shumanov avoids the head kick by Masters.
Masters fails with the takedown.
Shumanov stuffs the takedown attempt from Masters. Masters gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Phil Masters. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Shumanov wants to clinch.
Masters looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Shumanov is fending him off so far but Masters persists. Nope, Shumanov circles away and we're back to standing.

Masters moves in looking to clinch but Shumanov pushes him off.

Shumanov gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Masters rushes Shumanov and presses him up against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Masters pulls guard effortlessly.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Tarec Shumanov will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Shumanov tries for a takedown but Masters sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Nice takedown defense from Shumanov. No joy for Masters on that attempt.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Shumanov is defended easily by Masters.
Shumanov changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Masters tries to avoid it but Shumanov manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Masters to the ground. Masters escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Phil Masters has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tarec Shumanov.
Shumanov tries to clinch but Masters moves away

and Masters counters with a crisp one two that drops Shumanov! Masters thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Shumanov to his feet! Shumanov is in big trouble!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Masters thows a body kick. Shumanov tries to catch it but that hurt him.

Masters shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Masters wants to pass to mount but Shumanov is defending the position.
Shumanov is breathing heavily.
Masters throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Shumanov to regain full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Shumanov not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Masters looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shumanov keeping moving, preventing Masters from controlling successfully.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Shumanov pulls Masters in to control the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Masters throws a head kick that misses.
Masters shoots in and drives through. Shumanov sprawls well.
Masters shoots in for a takedown but Shumanov shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Masters moves into the clinch.
Shumanov can't break the clinch.

Masters ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Masters no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Masters is looking for a triangle here but Shumanov uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Shumanov is looking to take a break and control but Masters is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Masters is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Masters is working hard here to advance position.
Masters can't do much from the bottom here.
Masters looking for a sweep but Shumanov has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Shumanov controlling the position easily from mount.

A nice elbow there by Shumanov.
Masters tries to hold on but Shumanov pushes him away.

Shumanov can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Masters is looking to escape.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Shumanov lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Masters hang on?
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!



Shumanov closes the distance and clinches.

Masters escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Phil Masters is winning the standup battle so far.
Masters shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Masters swats away the attempt to clinch by Shumanov.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Shumanov is defended easily by Masters.
Shumanov fails in his attempt to clinch.
Shumanov tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Masters manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Masters avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Shumanov changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Masters looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Masters is trying to improve his position.
Tarec Shumanov has got the better of the ground game so far.
Shumanov wants to control but Masters is keeping him busy.
Masters can't do much from the bottom here.
Masters tries to bench press Shumanov off him but Shumanov keeps the position.
Shumanov wants to control but Masters is keeping him busy.
Masters tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Shumanov presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Masters tries to lock up and control but Shumanov gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Masters tries to improve his position but instead Shumanov has taken his back!

Masters controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.
Masters trying to control the hands but Shumanov won't let him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shumanov is working for a rear naked choke. Masters is not defending it well and Shumanov has tightened it up quickly! This could be all over! Masters refuses to tap and goes to sleep, forcing the referee to intervene. A little trickle of blood came out of Masters's nose as his head slumped to the floor. That is naaaasty!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:44 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Tarec Shumanov!
