0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jack Fowl! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Paulo Santos and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice takedown defense from Armstrong. No joy for Fowl on that attempt. Armstrong tries to close the distance and clinch up but Fowl swats him away and circles back towards the center. Armstrong shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Fowl but Fowl pushes him off and we're back to square one. Fowl fails with the takedown. Armstrong is trying hard to land a takedown here. Fowl sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Fowl shoots for a double leg takedown but Armstrong sprawls well. He's pushed Fowl's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Tim Armstrong has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jack Fowl. Armstrong shoots in looking for a takedown but Fowl manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Armstrong's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Armstrong shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Fowl pinned against the cage. Fowl gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Armstrong fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Fowl avoids it really well and circles away. Fowl circles away from the clinch attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Armstrong fails with a takedown attempt. Fowl throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Armstrong's waist but Armstrong gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Fowl off to one side. The fight stays on the outside here - Armstrong looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Armstrong wants to clinch. Armstrong looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Fowl is fending him off so far but Armstrong persists. Nope, Fowl circles away and we're back to standing. Armstrong shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Fowl has one foot on Armstrong's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Armstrong fails in his attempt to clinch. Armstrong fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Fowl avoids it really well and circles away. Armstrong is looking to clinch but Fowl is avoiding it.
Fowl shoots in for a double leg but Armstrong sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. No luck for Armstrong with that takedown attempt. Armstrong tries to score a power double leg takedown but Fowl sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Armstrong somewhat. Armstrong leaves Fowl with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Armstrong looks for a takedown but Fowl sprawls well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Armstrong avoids the head kick by Fowl.
Nice sprawl there from Armstrong as Fowl shoots in. Fowl takes the fight into the clinch. Fowl avoids the elbow strike from Armstrong, against the cage.

Armstrong pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage. Armstrong throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Fowl blocks it with crossed arms. With the two fighters working up against the cage, Armstrong just misses with a elbow thrown towards Fowl's brow.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Armstrong tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Armstrong using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Fowl has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Fowl tries for a takedown. No joy.
A battle for position here, against the cage. Fowl misses with a knee to the head. Fowl looks winded! Fowl avoids a wild elbow strike from Armstrong. Fowl tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Armstrong misses with an elbow over the top. Armstrong throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Fowl blocks it with crossed arms. Armstrong using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Armstrong landing knees to the head.
It looks like Jack Fowl has been cut. Armstrong tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Armstrong throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Armstrong lands an elbow that stopped Fowl in his tracks for a moment. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Tim Armstrong dominated that round. The cut man is working on Jack Fowl's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

It will also be interesting to see what tactics Armstrong uses from the top position. Fowl throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Armstrong escapes and throws Fowl's legs to the side, diving into side control! Fowl is breathing heavily. Fowl sneaks back into half guard. Fowl keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount. Armstrong is looking to take a break and control but Fowl is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Armstrong wants to stand up but Fowl manages to regain full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fowl is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Armstrong has his hands clasped together but Fowl extends an breaks Armstrong's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Fowl.
