Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 15 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, John Askren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tyson Shields!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Robert Twigg and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A low kick from Askren is predictable there

and Shields counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Askren lands with a left to the head.
An uppercut to the body lands inside from Askren.
A right hand to the body from Askren.
Askren lands a hook that snaps the head of Shields backwards.
Askren displaying some good clinch control by pressing Shields up against the cage.

Shields turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Shields manages to end up in side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Shields has knee on belly momentarily but Askren bucks him off and regains half guard.
Askren is trying is best to control the position here.

Askren's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Shields wants to lay and pray for a moment but Askren keeps working.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Tyson Shields was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Shields tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Askren counters with a left and a right that stings Shields.
Tyson Shields seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Shields throws a left and a right that both miss
and Askren counters with a stiff right hand.
Shields closes the distance looking to clinch
and Askren counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Shields thinking.
Askren goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Shields throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Askren tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Shields is in Askren's guard.
Shields postures up in Askren's guard and throws a big left but Askren blocks it.
Askren is adopting a defensive guard.

Shields wants to pass the guard but Askren is keeping the position.
Askren utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Shields throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Shields with a flurry of punches that miss.

Askren keeping moving, preventing Shields from controlling successfully.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Tyson Shields hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Shields throws an off balance right hand
and Askren cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Shields is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Askren's half guard.
Shields trying to control from half guard but Askren is working away.
Shields throws a strike but Askren avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Tyson Shields will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Shields looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Askren!
Askren holds on tight, trying to prevent any damage.
Askren is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Shields off and has taken his back!
Shields is trying to break free.

Askren decides to stand up, even though he's got his opponent's back.

Shields fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Askren to the ground. Shields is now in Askren's guard.

Shields looking to sit in guard and control but Askren gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Askren postures up.
Shields wants to hit a switch here but Askren passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Shields there!
Tyson Shields has got the better of the ground game so far.
Shields is just holding on here. Askren manages to take his back.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Shields is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

Askren has decided that he can't make progress quickly enough from the back position and has rather unusually decided to stand up from the dominant position. Obviously he's going to be looking for the knockout on the feet here!

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Shields scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Askren regains half guard, as Shields was trying to land strikes.
Shields throws a strike but Askren avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Shields drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Askren manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Shields has Askren in his guard.

Shields is working an open guard so Askren takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Shields tries to clinch up
and Askren counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Tyson Shields will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Askren's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Shields shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Shields showed some decent athleticism there.
Askren is doing well to control the position and prevent Shields from advancing to side control.

Askren regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Shields.
Askren manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Shields manages to get himself to full guard.
Shields trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

Askren stands up from Shields's guard - Askren perhaps looking for a knockout.

Shields shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Askren manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Askren has control of Shields's left arm, preventing Shields from doing any damage.
Shields trying to control the position from guard on top but Askren is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Shields is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Tyson Shields.

and Askren counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

and Askren counters with a nice uppercut.

letting Askren counter with a right hand.

Shields shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Askren is trying to defend but Shields finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

John Askren has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Askren has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

I would just about give that final round to Tyson Shields.
