PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mr Gold (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mica Makaaja (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Makaaja has chosen BassLovers United - I Can't Dance as his entrance music. Mica Makaaja told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
19 - 14 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mr Gold! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mica Makaaja! The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Ben Zyskovitsi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gold closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Makaaja to the mat! Makaaja manages to get full guard. Makaaja working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Gold has passed into half guard!
Gold sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Makaaja defending well though. Gold tries to pass to full mount but Makaaja defends it. Makaaja is in trouble now - Gold has advanced to mount! Makaaja tries to get back to half guard but can't. Gold avoids the attempt from Makaaja to control. Gold trying to control but he's not successful this time. Makaaja tries to get back to half guard but can't. Gold avoids the attempt from Makaaja to control. Makaaja sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Makaaja wants to get back to full guard. Makaaja trying to control but Gold postures up.
Makaaja moves into full guard.
Gold connects with a couple of short punches. Gold loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Makaaja looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Gold stays in close to Makaaja's body and controls the position. Gold avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Gold slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Gold is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Makaaja is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Gold landing strikes. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Gold trying to control the action but Makaaja is working from the bottom. Gold taking a breather here. Gold working away. Gold wants to control but Makaaja is keeping him busy.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Makaaja manages to get back to half guard. Makaaja is looking to improve his position.
Makaaja looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Makaaja has hold of a guillotine but he's not going to be able to crank on it really with only half guard, so it's no trouble for Gold. Oh but Makaaja has got full guard now! Oh boy! This one could be over very soon! Gold goes limp - he's gone! Makaaja jumps up and celebrates with the crowd - fantastic submission finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Mica Makaaja! A relieved looking Mica Makaaja thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
