Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tony Brown! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Ernesto Cruz! The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Chris Saunders and Paul Gruel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz fails with a takedown attempt. Cruz throws a head kick that misses. Brown needs to keep his hands up - Cruz had a free shot at his head there. Cruz tries to score a power double leg takedown but Brown sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cruz somewhat. Cruz throws a nice head kick!
Cruz shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Cruz showed some decent athleticism there. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Cruz prevents Brown from improving his position. Brown moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz distracts Brown with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Cruz pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Brown is keeping the position for now. Brown being controlled here, momentarily. Cruz with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Brown has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Cruz can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Cruz trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Brown has his foot on Cruz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cruz works his way back into a safe position though. Cruz postures up and lands a big shot to Brown's brow. Brown wants to control the position but Cruz says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. Brown trying to control from the bottom.
Cruz wants to pass to mount but Brown is defending the position. Cruz wants to work for an arm triangle but Brown is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Cruz is taking a breather. Brown says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Brown has hold of Cruz's hands but Cruz slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Cruz is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Cruz looking to control but Brown is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Cruz jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Brown manages to avoid the submission attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Brown sneaks back into half guard. Brown wants to improve his position but Cruz is controlling well.
Brown pushes Cruz off and gets back to his feet. Brown tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Cruz was well out of range. Poor timing from Brown. Cruz with a lazy takedown attempt and Brown counters with a lovely shot to the body. Tony Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ernesto Cruz. Cruz shoots and misses and Brown counters with a nice uppercut.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cruz rushes Brown and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Brown pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Brown gets caught flat footed, as Cruz shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Brown is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Cruz is aware though and is defending well. Cruz passes Brown's left leg - he's now in half guard. Brown wants to improve his position but Cruz is controlling well.
Cruz is looking to stall here but Brown recovers full guard. Brown looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Cruz trying to control but Brown is working from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ernesto Cruz dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Cruz shoots in but no luck this time. Cruz throws a sloppy head kick and Brown moves out of range easily. Ernesto Cruz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Cruz shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Brown pinned against the cage. Brown gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Brown listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Cruz throws a low kick but it's checked well by Brown. Cruz fails with the takedown and Brown counters with a nice double leg into guard. Tony Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ernesto Cruz. Brown stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cruz swivels though and keeps the full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Brown looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Brown is pressing down on Cruz's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Brown is looking for a triangle but Cruz pushes his legs off easily.
Cruz wants to stand but Brown has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Brown being controlled here, momentarily. Brown keeping moving, preventing Cruz from controlling successfully.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz controls the pace of the fight for a moment. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Brown has a closed guard, preventing Cruz from standing up.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Ernesto Cruz hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Cruz gets in close and instigates a clinch. Cruz blocks an elbow strike. Cruz tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Brown just stands there and leans against the cage. Cruz jumps guard but Brown turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing. Cruz blocking some punches.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Brown just misses with a elbow thrown towards Cruz's brow. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! A short uppercut from Brown. Brown pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Brown thows a left - swing and a miss!
That's three minutes gone in the round. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Cruz. Cruz misses with a takedown and Brown counters with a one-two to the body. A punch lands to the side of Cruz 's head but he takes it in his stride. Cruz feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Brown is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a triangle but Cruz frees his head nicely. Oh but Brown has switched to an armbar! Cruz is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
