PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tj Shields (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pettis comes into the arena with Showtime blaring out of the sound system. On his way into the cage it seems that Anthony Pettis has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Anthony Pettis seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Anthony Pettis!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tj Shields!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Yves DeLean and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pettis misses with a series of wild punches.
Pettis thows a body shot but no joy.
Pettis closes the distance looking to clinch

and Shields counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Pettis gets through Shields's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Pettis fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Pettis gets underhooks to prevent Shields's takedown attempt.
Shields tries for a takedown. No joy.
Pettis landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Shields has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Pettis is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Anthony Pettis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tj Shields.
Shields has Pettis pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Pettis manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Shields lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Pettis actively working from the bottom here.
Pettis has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Shields is working away from the top position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pettis gets back to full guard.

Pettis looking for a guillotine here but Shields defends easily.
Pettis can't keep his opponent in guard - Shields advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Pettis wants to improve his position but Shields is controlling well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pettis is trying to maintain the position but Shields is very close to passing his half guard.

Shields is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Shields thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pettis's head.
Pettis is trying to maintain the position but Shields is very close to passing his half guard.

Pettis actively working from the bottom here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Shields stops Pettis from getting back to his feet.

Pettis looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Nice strikes from Shields there.

Pettis won't allow Shields to pass to mount.
Pettis moves into full guard.

Pettis has his foot on Shields's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Shields works his way back into a safe position though.

Shields avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Pettis has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Shields can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Pettis is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Shields is aware though and is defending well.

Pettis looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Shields scoring with some ground and pound.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Shields tries to free his leg and advance position but Pettis is retaining full guard.
Shields is in close to Pettis's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Pettis throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Shields escapes and throws Pettis's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Pettis is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Shields asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Shields has hold of Pettis's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Pettis tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Shields cranks the arm and Pettis screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Pettis, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:44 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Tj Shields!
Tj Shields is the new featherweight champion!
A relieved looking Tj Shields thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
