PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Trey Damons (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benzi Kato (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Damons's entrance music is All the Above. A fine choice. Benzi Kato told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Trey Damons!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Benzi Kato!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, and Frank Antenori.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Damons is trying hard to land a takedown here. Kato sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Kato takes the fight into the clinch.

Kato pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
A right-left combo lands from Kato.

Kato instigates a clinch.

Kato breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Kato throws a nice looking combination but Damons bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Kato throws out a powerful jab.
Kato moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Kato stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Kato wants it to stay on the feet.
Kato bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Damons shoots in but Kato avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Kato shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Damons's guard.
Kato must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Damons looking for subs off his back but Kato has passed one foot through into half guard.

Kato looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kato tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Damons.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kato wants to stand up but Damons has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Kato is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Damons doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Kato.
Damons slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Damons has his foot on Kato's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kato works his way back into a safe position though.

Kato looking to sit in guard and control but Damons gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Kato wants to stand but Damons is controlling the position.
Damons trying to stand up but can't free himself from Kato's guard.

Kato pushes Damons off and scrambles back to his feet.
Kato feints a jab promting Damons to slip. Kato then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Damons slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Kato closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Damons did well to prevent Kato getting side control.
Damons keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Kato wants to stand but Damons has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Kato wants to pass to mount but Damons is defending the position.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kato is looking to take a break and control but Damons is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Damons wants to control but Kato is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Benzi Kato dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Damons looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kato is fending him off so far but Damons persists. Nope, Kato circles away and we're back to standing.

Kato throws a head kick that misses.
Kato lands a really nice looking cross but Damons seems unphased.

Kato gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Damons regains guard.

Damons had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Kato defends it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kato avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Kato looks to land a combination but Damons avoids it well.

Damons closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Kato desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Damons seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kato does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
